IMPHAL, Oct 28: For the third time in as many months the heavily guarded VIP area of Babupara came in the spotlight with one more militant being nabbed from the quarter of a sitting MLA today, taking the tally of nabbed militants to 14 since the apprehension of 11 militants from the area on August 17 this year.
The latest arrest points to the futility of the state Cabinet decision on August 31 regarding measures to avoid repetition of such incidents by maintaining a daily list of individuals who would be staying overnight at every MLA and minister’s quarters.
On August 17 this year, 11 militants including those of the KYKL, PLA and KCP were nabbed from the official quarters of MLAs and ex-MLAs located at Babupara in raids conducted by a combined team of Imphal east and west police. Disassembled weapons and ammunitions apart from demand letters of the KYKL were also recovered during the raids on that day.
Once again on September 16 a raid was conducted by the same combined team of Imphal east and west police which detained one KYKL cadre from the quarter of a ex-MLA and another NSCN (IM) cadre from a rented house in the colony.
Yet again today, one PREPAK cadre namely Khanembam Milan alias Somi, 34, son of late Lembi of Phumlou Siphai who was taking shelter at the official quarter of sitting ruling CPI MLA, Borajao at Bapupara was apprehended by a team of Imphal west district police at around 9 am.
The PREPAK cadre was apprehended in a raid conducted at the MLA’s quarter based on information provided by two PREPAK cadres apprehended yesterday by the police while conducting frisking and checking at Sekmai Nongthonband along the NH-39, said a statement of the Imphal west SP, Clay Khongsai.
The two PREPAK cadres namely Achom Bedajit alais Beda, 28, son of A Ibocha Singh of Phumlou Siphai and Wahengbamn Roshan alias Boiler Singh, 28, son of W Khujo Singh of Waheng Leikai Lairembi Awang, currently residing at Tera Amudon Leikai, were nabbed at around 5 pm yesterday when police on frisking duty spotted them moving in a suspicious manner on a two-wheeler vehicle.
They were nabbed after a chase as they attempted to flee. One 9 mm pistol with one magazine having two live rounds of ammunition and the Honda Activa, (MN03S-0343) which they came on were recovered from them.
During preliminary interrogation they disclosed that they were assigned to collect khaini, zarda and mitha pan from the shops located between Phumlou and Kanglatongbi and punish the sellers, the SP said.
Regarding the state government’s measures to check militants taking shelter at the MLAs and ministers quarters, mention may be made that state Cabinet in one of the meetings held on August 31 had approved a proposal of the home department to maintain a daily list of individuals who would be staying overnight at every MLA and minister’s quarters.
A register is to be maintained by the commander of the security guards detailed at each MLA or minister’s quarters mentioning the names and particulars of the individuals and their reason for stay as per the decision agreed by the Cabinet ministers. The register can be checked by the police at any time.
