Police raid godowns in Churachandpur

Lamka, Jan 24: Following the report of PDS rice pilferage in the local market, a team of CCpur police headed by SP S Manglemjao Singh today raided at least three godowns including the shop where ZEPADA claimed PDS rice was unloaded on 13 January. The police raid today established the fact that ‘Vanda’ was misquoted by the ZEPADA statement issued yesterday. Vanda was owned by one Momocha while the actual shop was owned by Abung Singh with no sign-board but registered as Chicken Centre cum Variety Store.

ZEPADA representatives have claimed after the police raid, that PDS tags were recovered from the rice bags when its representatives checked the stockpile on the unmarked store. To prove their claim tags allegedly obtained from the rice bags and photos taken from a mobile phone with the tags still intact with the rice bags were shown to the media today, but Abung Singh said he wasn’t aware of any tag on his supplies obtained directly from Dimapur.

‘I am not aware of any tag on the bags. I placed my orders in bulk at Dimapur and they were delivered here,’ he said today adding, ‘two more truck load of his orders will arrive today or tomorrow.’ He also produces Cash Memos for the rice he claimed was obtained from Dimapur, which the police took possession of during their raid.

The District administration on their part said, they are investigating the authenticity of the report. Their early indication however was, if there was any pilferage at all it would not be on their part.

Indian PM Manmohan Singh undergoes successful cardiac surgery

New Delhi, Jan 24 (PTI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today underwent a successful coronary by-pass surgery in which five grafts were done to overcome multiple blockages to heart in an operation that lasted for a little over eleven hours.

"He is conscious, responding and is very stable. He would be more active now than before the five grafts," Dr Ramakant Panda, a specialist in re-do by-pass flown in from Mumbai's Asian Heart Institute who performed the surgery leading a team of doctors, told a press conference in the night here.

Dr K S Reddy, the Prime Minister's personal physician, said they expected the Prime Minister to attend to some of the official duties after two weeks, most of his official duties after four weeks and be fully active and functional by six weeks or even before. "He will be more active now".

One reason why the Prime Minister opted for an immediate surgery was he wanted to be ready and fully active well before the elections, Dr Sampath Kumar, Head of the Cardio Vascular Department at the AIIMS said.

Replying to a question, Dr Panda said that there was no setback on the operation table and since it was a second by-pass, the surgery took so long. There were no complications.

The Prime Minister will be in the ICU for three days and spend a total of seven to eight days in the hospital.

Describing Singh as a "tranquil, calm and composed" person, Reddy said the Prime Minister told the doctors before he was wheeled in "I am ready".
