Are we our own enemy?

By L Olivia Ngaineihlian

Introduction:

At present, every nation on earth is standing up as one single entity to be recognized as peace loving, enterprising, hard working and westernized nation state. Freedom of speech, expression, respect for Human Right, natural resources, economical and academical growth rate are the main aspects to become an internal part of respectable civilized community. Even as other parts of India Nation States are smoothly and peacefully growing stronger and richer by the years, with financial and technical assistances from Western and Far-East Asia World, the princely State of Manipur and its socio-political leaders let themselves abandoned due to corrupted, anti-social and discriminating activities. There are far too many violence, bandhs, bloodbaths, extremism and disjointed educational setups. It is not very clear who is fighting for whom and for what positive purpose and justifiable reasons. Mani-pur today is caught in a quagmire of its own creation. We, Manipuris as an enlightened people, always felt proud of our rich heritage, culture resilience and wisdom that our forefathers exhibited in such large abundances.

The world looked upon us with an admiration and appreciated the rich heritage that was passed down through generations. Over the years however, we have shown scant respect for our customs, ethos, development and welfare and are now seeing Manipur sinking into an abyss from where it is hard to extricate ourselves unless we rede-dicate ourselves to work for the betterment of the people.

Having seen the unjustifiable events unfolding in the State, it needs no great intelligence to see the reason behind our sorry state today. Poor administration, corruption and a culture of self aggrandizement have taken their own tolls on our vibrant society. We have become myopic in our approach and often cannot understand our own interest. Had we realized the folly of our actions, we would not have found the regular relay of bandhs and dharnas that are thrust upon the common men disturbing his life and affecting his livelihood to an extent that he is forced into penury.

And to say that the bandhs are held to redress the grievances of the common man! Whom are we fooling? No one else but we Manipuris ourselves are suffering because of these bandhs and blockades. We are being denied our rights to livelihood by one group or the other, the very people who claim to be our saviours. How can they save us from poverty when they are the ones adding to our misery? They are the ones putting impediments in the part of progress , and preventing our children from getting good education. Think, my fellow citizens have we ever raised any issue that would better our lives, any issue that would lead to prosperity, any issue that would make a common man support our cause? Have we ever talk-ed about developments? Have we ever thought about increasing entrepreneurship in our State of creating jobs, of improving infrastructure? Or have we been protesting against mundane issues that are actually of no relevance to the common man but help vested interests in furthering their own cause? What more can you expect from those who are ready to reduce to ashes, the age

old scriptures and treasures of the people? Ready to take lives without any remorse?

We have long been crying loud and hard about the AFSPA without taking into account ‘the AFSPA’ of own armed extremists -summary execution or shooting of antisocial or misguided youths and corrupted officials . We always seem to forget the moral reasons of needless killings or bloody punishments. Why is it that most of the well known tainted politicians and corrupted Ministers are being ignored by the UG militants? This we all know, if it is what we think is true.

Today, the only em-ployments of any worth is provided by the recruitment rallies by the Armed Forces, the only development that is going on is through the projects undertaken by the armed forces, any questions?

Op-posed by vested interests and we are being told not to accept these projects. The very activities that are sure to enhance our quality of life are to be refused. What for? To keep us poor? Is

anyone else undertaking these works for us? If yes, we certainly will refuse the assistance from Security Forces. But if there is none to undertake them, then why deny ourselves the developments that is offered to us on a platter?

There are allegations of misconduct at times aga-inst the Security Forces. True, they need to be investigated as is always done, and the culprits if found, punished. But does that mean we turn a blind eye to the contributions that they have made? Agitations to project the grievances of the people need to be undertaken in a peaceful democratic way, with little or no inconvenience to the common man.

But let us, as good citizens, carry out some introspection of our actions. We will find no answers, but one question will stare us in the face: Are we our own enemy? Are we the stumbling blocks of our own Right Paths and Victims of Our Own Seeds of Distrust and Hatred ? Let us all remember that we, as a responsible and patriotic citizens, all are the architect of our own fate and the Captain of our own Destiny. As Mahatma Gandhi said: ‘Victory attained by violence is temporary.’
