Nagaland Government has won the United Nations' Public Service Awards for promoting community participation by handing over the ownership and management of schools, hospitals, electricity, water supply and tourism to the villagers.
The award coming under the category of fostering participation in policy-making decisions through innovative mechanism would be given on June 23 at New York, the Chief Minister's office said in a release. Nagaland Government is the lone winner in Asia Pacific region.
It is one of the 12 awards given globally by the UN in various areas of public services. The announcement was communicated to the Chief Minister's office by Union Steel Secretary and former Nagaland Chief Secretary RS Pandey, the brain behind the programme. Keeping in view that the Naga society possesses strong community spirit, community participation in public services was introduced in 2002 instead of privatisation, resulting in improvement in delivery system in rural areas, the Government said.

Dimapur, May 18: The Nagaland unit of Congress has called a 12-hour “total bandh of Dimapur” on May 19 from 6 am to 6 pm in protest against the Nagaland Government’s failure to maintain law and order and check the spiralling prices of essential commodities. The Congress alleged Government remained a mute spectator to the ongoing spate of factional clashes in and around Dimapur which claimed several lives. “The upsurge of fratricidal killings and factional clashes has created law and order problem thereby affecting the people and that as a responsible political party, the Congress party cannot remain voiceless when the lives and property of our people are at stake”.
The Congress said the bandh is not only to convey its protest and resentment, but also to demand from the Centre to immediately intervene in the present law and order problem in the State.

KNF warns
IMPHAL, May 18: Issuing clarification on the death of Mayengbam Tomba and Malsawm Vaiphei slain at Tera Urak, Tamukhong on May 11, KNF charged the duo as the collectors of USRA. Narrating the incident, a press release sent out by the commander of eastern division of the outfit, LS Joel asserted that USRA opened fire to them when KNA cadres went to investigate following villagers complaining that USRA cadres were collecting money from the trucks quarrying sand. Conveying that USRA commander Genminlien escaped narrowly in the incident, KNF asserted that they recovered one AK 56 rifle during the shoot-out. KNF also urged womenfolk not to stage any dharna against the killing. The USRA cadres must surrender to KNF at the earliest, warned KNF.

MUTSU boycotts
IMPHAL, May 18: Standing firm unmoved on its stand, Manipur University Tribal Students’ Union (MUTSU) will boycott the ensuing Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) elections scheduled for May 19, said a press release.
MUTSU asked the tribal students not enter the University campus on the election day. However, volunteers and students hav- ing exams on the day will be exempted, added the release. It may be mentioned that no tribal student had filed nomination for the said election.
