Kohima, March 13 (MExN): The worldwide concern of global climate change came into highlight in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly session today with Congress MLA C Apok Jamir raising queries on what step the state government has taken to address the phenomena and its impact. Replying to the MLA, Minister for Forest MC Konyak asserted that ‘Nagaland is also affected by climate changes being part of a global world’.

The minister cited the evidence of unseasoned rains, droughts or failure of monsoon, scanty rain and increase in local weather temperatures; he also cited altitudinal incidences of appearance in insects-like mosquitoes in hitherto ‘unknown places’. He said the extreme weather and its unpredictability over the last four years are definitely attributes of climate change.

On being queried what steps the government has taken to address the phenomena and its climatic impact in the state, the minister said afforesting jhumlands, protection and preservation of existing natural forests were some of the steps taken. Relatively, awareness-creation for alternative sources of energy for cooking, heating, lighting and improved methods using firewood also figure in the measures taken.

The minister said that the State Environment Policy is being drafted. Community biodiversity conservation and betel nut leaf vine tree projects will also be implemented during 2009-2010. Likewise, Konyak informed that the Nagaland Pollution Control Board will be strengthened with infrastructure, funding and that JICA funding is being accessed for rural livelihood issues and afforesting, among others.

He said that such steps will be used to address vulnerability of the rural people of Nagaland. Nagaland is intending to contribute to the global effort against global warming, by maintaining the existing forest cover at 82. 75 per cent of its geographical area and also increase the productivity of dense and moderately-dense forest covers, he said.
