Indefinite bandh at Nambol

OUR CORRESPONDENT

Imphal, June 15: The All Nambol United Clubs Organisation has decided to impose an indefinite Nambol bandh from midnight tonight, after a long wait for the Manipur government’s response to the demand to speed up development activities at Nambol in Bishnupur district.

A bandh at Nambol, a sub-division of Bishnupur district, would mean snapping of road communication between Imphal and Bishnupur as well as Churachandpur districts.

The Imphal-Churachandpur Road, which passes throu-gh Nambol bazaar, is a part of National Highway 150, which links Imphal with Aizawl.

In a statement issued today, the secretary of the organisation, Th. Jayenta Singh, said it has decided to impose the indefinite bandh after the Okram Ibobi Singh government failed to respond to the demand to speed up development activities.

He said the organisation submitted a memorandum to the chief minister and all the ministers concerned on February 19 to look into the grievances of the people of Nambol by March 4.

“However, the government failed to respond to the demands. So the organisation has decided to impose the bandh,” the secretary said.

The demands include strengthening the embankments and construction of retaining walls on the Nambol riverbank before the monsoon, inauguration of the Nambol community health centre, opening of a fire sub-station at Nambol bazar, completion of Khoriphaba water supply scheme and improvement of two district roads, Komkeirap-Chingmang Road and Kangmong-Nambol Mangjing Road.

The memorandum said the people of Nambol are suffering because of floods every year.

The organisation requested the irrigation and flood control minister also to look into the problem of floods. The request, however, went unheeded.

It also said the construction of the community health centre was completed long back but it was yet to be inaugurated.

“Lack of healthcare facilities at Nambol is making the people suffer,” the memorandum said. While appealing to the people to extend co-operation, the organisation said works related to health, power, water supply and religious activities would be exempted from the purview of the bandh.

Kongkham Youth Club and Library, a local youth organisation of the area, said it would extend all possible support to any course of action taken by the Nambol United Clubs Organisation for the welfare of the people of the area.
