RESTORE DEMOCRACY! UPHOLD HUMAN RIGHTS!
DOWN, DOWN STATE TERRORISM!

No.5/ZRO/I&PR-1/99: The Zomi Re-unification Organisation (ZRO) is stunned and saddened by the Burmese Military Junta/State Peace and Development Council’s (SPDC) bloody crackdown on peaceful pro-democracy demonstrators. All sections of Burmese citizens, irrespective of ethnic affiliation, regional loyalty and religion have been struggling for the restoration of democracy in Burma.

We strongly condemn the Junta’s use of brutal violence, killing of unarmed citizens and peaceful demonstrators. We demand the SPDC to immediately stop its brutal acton to prevent further bloodshed.

We ask SPDC and its allies to stop from the illusion that the current crisis can be solved by restoring to military might but accept the urgent need for genuine national reconciliation. It is significant to note that such brutal suppression is detrimental to regional and international peace and stability. The SPDC must be fully responsible for any such consequence.

We resolutely support the courageous democracy loving people of Burma who risk their lives and demonstrated in the streets to reclaim their long lost freedom, democracy and human rights.

We urge all sections of the people of Burma irrespective of their race, class, religion, ethnicity, in particular those patriots within the Burmese Army/Security Forces to show their love for democracy and human rights by restraining themselves. We also appeal the ethnic groups who are having a ceasefire agreement with the Military junta and revolt against the illegitimate and oppressive regime.

We demand that the long incarcerated Nobel Laureate Daw Aung Saan Suu Kyi who has been recently shifted to insein prison and other political prisoners including PU CIn Sian Thang, MP and President of Zomi National Congress, Pu Thawng Kho Thang, MP who are arrested recently be released and negotiation be started forthwith to arrive at a peaceful settlement.

We convey our heartfelt thanks to the UN Secretary General, the US President, the European Union and other world leaders who strongly support the cause of democracy and show great effort to help the people of Burma who have been suffering the repressive military dictatorship for many decades. We would like to urge the Government of India and China to recast their policy towards Burma and help the restoration of democracy and peace and act as a responsible neighbor.

We earnestly urge the UN, US, EU, ASEAN and all international communities to use their diplomatic skill, economic prowess and all other possible means including military power to influence and change the SPDC’s attitude to avoid further killing and bloodshed of the innocent people of Burma.

The ZRO and Zomis worldwide declare its fullest support to this just and courageous struggle and will continue to do so until the fall of this repressive regime. We will continue our strife in tandem with the people of Burma and also cooperate with the interest groups to achieve that aim untl democracy and freedom is restored in the country.

LONG LIVE DEMOCRACY!
