Ugly facets of famine now visible

Lamka, Nov 5: At this instance, when the elected representatives were diligently rummaging for power the interior populaces in Churachandpur were helplessly gazing at their meager harvest, recollecting the devastation ‘Mautam’ had landed them fifty years ago.

The revealing account, though very much anticipated has shocked the entire media community here as M Ginzasuan and his team recount the gloomy encounter they had while engaging themselves in launching Fair-price shops last week. The district supply officer and his team advance to the interior for streamlining PDS and initiating FPS were greeted by distressing tales of pitiable villagers.

‘The fate, interior villagers were enduring at the moment is nothing sort of a famine’ Ginzasuan said while narrating his encounter while touring the area. Of the thirteen odd villages he had been to during his week long tour in Thanlon sub-division, not even a single village had reportedly claimed of reaping normal harvest.

Rodent the most talk about cause of devastating the harvest were not the only dilemma. Bats, Wild Boars, Insects and storm had cause similar havoc to the jhum dependent populaces, he said and further quote the villagers of saying that it will be only usual if Boars and other animals enters the field, but the magnitude of the devastation it had caused were not seen before.

Chief of Dialkhai, S Paukhogin is said to have inform the visiting official that two tin of crop he had sowed merely reap the same amount. If it’s in other years he would have easily reap a hundred. Zamthuam of Thanlon failed to reap one tin of the one and a half tin he sowed. Same is the case for Khatzathang of Sinzawl. What is revealing, in fact is the claimed that these three people were the lucky ones with their counterparts many of their counterparts having nothing to harvest at all.

The best harvest witness by the team is a man who claimed to harvest nine a half tin, but as he had allegedly joked to the officials – he still lack half a tin to pay the Christian tithe - one tenth of the harvest.

The DSO team being encountered with unlikely facts takes the trouble to walk to their fields and confirm of the mass crop failure in the interior villages. Samples of standing healthy looking crops but with bare grains and those nib by bats and rats were brought here and produce before the media.

Besides the Paddy, it was alleged that the devastation has effect chillies and ginger field as well.

Another alarming fact according to the DSO is the provision of containing only 40% of the populace under BPL. Even if PDS supplies were brought to the village in the present set-up the supply has to be shared with the remaining sixty percent, making it too little to sustain them for the month. Such a situation transpires, according to the official, as all the villagers were very much under BPL category.

With the people having failed to reap even sufficient harvest to last them till Christmas, the once a year merriment the jhum based populace enjoy is sure to lack the spirit, if there is any merriment at all.

To obtain the true magnitude of the devastation and witness the suffering its brethren in the interiors were undergoing Manipur Hills Journalist Union in its emergency executive meeting held later today decided to conduct an extensive week long tour of the length and breadth of the sub-divisions beginning this weekend. The team will then confirm if the clamed to Bukpi Chief of having to eat anything that fails to call them ‘Pa’ (dady) is overstated.
