IMPHAL, Mar 15: The pre-sident of All Tribal Stu- dents’ Union, Manipur (ATSUM) Dr John Pulamte and president of Manipur University Tribal Students’ Union (MUTSU) G Gaisin-gam accompanied Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh in meeting Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at New Delhi yesterday to discuss the problem of tribal students of Manipur University.
Education Minister L Ja-yentakumar, Hills and Tribal Development Minister DD Thaisii, Chairman of Hill Area Committee (HAC) Thangminlien Kipgen, De-puty Chairman of HAC Khanthuanang Panmei and MLA Doukhomang and Principal Secretary of Hi-gher Education P Sarat- chandra were also part of the team that briefed the Prime Minister on the problem of tribal students of Manipur University in matters of employment in particular, according to a statement is-sued jointly by assistant ge- neral secretary (Atsum) Apao Haokip and general secretary (Mutsu) Michael Lunminthang.
The joint statement said that the Prime Minister was quite convinced and aware of all the issues raised by ATSUM and MUTSU. Nonetheless, the student bodies reiterated their earlier decision of ‘en-masse pull out’ from Manipur University if the impasse is not settled within the current academic session. Drawing the attention of the tribal students who are now appearing the TDC (Core) examination, the joint statement said that they should not look forward in continuing their education under Manipur University as they no future at all under the present set-up. In fact, those who are now already in the University undergoing various PG courses will be leaving en-masse if the assurances given by the Prime Minister do not materialise within this academic, the joint statement said, adding that the date and the time of the exodus will be made known later.
