Another NE woman molested in Delhi & Humiliated

New Delhi, Oct 22: Yesterday around 12.30 am, a north east woman of 21 years old was molested and beaten up in Delhi. She resides in Munirka with her sister and is a student of Delhi University. The incident happened when she along with her sister went to visit her cousin brother who stays at a rented room in Mahipalpur.
The confrontation took place when her sister was inside the shared bathroom while she was waiting outside at the main door. The north east woman had to raise an alarm when the accused who happens to reside at the same building as a tenant claimed that he was a policeman and started to take pictures while molesting her. After hearing the commotion her brother came out with a friend from their room to protest at the lewd remarks the man was making.
Shortly people gathered and stopped the fight but it was a humiliating price to pay for protecting one’s own kin because the next early morning they were asked to vacate the room immediately by the landlord. The other north east students who were occupying the other two rooms at the same building were also forced to vacate without any notice or explanation.
When the victim along with the fact finding team of NESCH (North East Support Centre and Helpline) went to the police station to lodge a complaint the police were reluctant to file an FIR. With much waited hours and argument from the team which comprises of a Supreme Court lawyer, a Reverend, mediapersons and other human rights activists, the complaint was finally filed under the relevant Section of IPC and the ST/SC (Prevention of atrocities) Act. It’s an unsaid understanding to imagine what would happen if the victim walked inside the police station alone.
The gestures of gender, caste, region, religion and sexual discrimination are no more new to the north east people in Delhi or outside their homeland. But can we endure it as a trend in Delhi and remain silent? Let us all remember that diversity is a blessing, not a curse. It is an appeal to the public leaders, student bodies and political leaders to join hands and give support by being a part of the Helpline for North East people in Delhi.
