IMPHAL, April 18: Three students bodies, Democratic Students’ Alliance Manipur, DESAM, All Tribal Students Union Manipur, ATSUM and the Zeliangrong Students Union Manipur, ZSUM, in a joint press meet today at the office of the DESAM said they would be organising a free medical camp in the Tipaimukh sub-division where an epidemic of fever, dysentery and respiratory problems have killed at least 29 children.
The tour of the district will begin tomorrow.
The ATSUM information and publicity spokesperson, Joseph Hmar, told the assembled media persons that since January this year, of the 54 villages in the subdivision, the worst affected are Lungthulien, Leisen, Parbung, Pathpoihmun, Senuom, Rawvakot, Tiansuong and Damdei village.
Upto date information received at 11 am this morning confirmed 29 deaths of children and of these except for on 2-year-old the rest are all below eight years, he said.
He expressed surprise that till date, the chief medical officer, CMO, Churachandpur, the concerned minister and the medical directorate have widely varying reports of the epidemic. Is it because they are not concerned enough, he asked.
He said while the students would be starting off their tour tomorrow, another medical team of the R.I.M.S. would be joining them on Monday and together they would conduct the free medical camp.
While on the tour, the students would also survey the condition of schools in the district, he said.
The DESAM secretary general, Yumnam Ratan Kumar said it is also essential for such initiatives of touring and holding free medical camps to be taken to other remote districts in the coming days.
In this effort, he appealed to all civil society bodies in the state to pitch in their mite and make the campaign their own too.
He also appealed to the staff of the community health centres in the Tipaimukh division to extend their fullest cooperation and assistance in present medical camp.
