Mizo NGOs more powerful than political parties!

NEWMAI NEWS

AIZAWL, Oct 28 – Social organisations in Mizoram are more influential and powerful to some extent in Mizoram politics than the political parties themselves specially during the election time!

The influence of the Mizoram Peoples’ Forum (MPF), the Young Mizo Association (YMA), the Mipui Tangrual Pawl (MTP) or Peoples’ Front and other bodies like the various farmers’ unions and local organisations, is very much bound to create tremendous impact in the November 29 Mizoram Assembly elections.

Mipui Tangrual Pawl (MTP) is currently headed by journalist K Sapdanga, who is the editor of Mizoram’s largest circulated newspaper Vanglaini. MTP is not a political party but a social body run by dedicated social workers and Mizo youths. The objectives of the MTP are to clean up the political and social systems in Mizoram.

The Mizoram Peoples’ Forum (MPF) is being sponsored by Mizoram Presbyterian Church Synod, the biggest and the most influential church body in Mizoram. The MPF has been apealing to all the underground groups not to interfere in the forthcoming Mizoram elections. The Forum had discussed the matter with the NSCN leaders in Kolkata last month. Election related feastings have also been banned by the Forum.

The Young Mizo Association (YMA), the biggest NGO in Mizoram, too is working in the line of MPF. The Central Young Mizo Association leaders had met the leaders of Zo Revolutionary Army (ZRA) and Hmar Peoples Convention-Democratic (HPC-D) in Manipur’s Churchandpur district two weeks ago appealing to the militants not to interfere in the Mizoram elections.

These social organisations in Mizoram have been issuing various election-related directives to the candidates and the political parties with ‘Dos and Donts’ for the November 29 polls.

Given the situation where the people in Mizoram have great regards for the social bodies, the politicians and political parties are cautiously treading while wooing voters.
