Youth should not bother about future: Kalam

DIMAPUR, Dec 28 – Centering on his pet subject of igniting minds, former President APJ Abdul Kalam today asked the youth not to bother much about the future even as the present economic slowdown has hit employment prospects in the country.

Describing the current job strains as a temporary feature, Dr Kalam asserted that after a decade, the country would emerge as a strong entity in every field and termed the youth as the power of the nation.

Stating that the presence of youth in politics gives the system a good direction, he called upon them to join politics like any other profession saying they can immensely contribute towards developmental politics.

Reiterating his idea of development politics, the former President asserted, there were “only political politics and developmental politics, but there cannot be dirty politics.

Interacting with students at the 16th National Students Science Congress here, the former President expressed the hope that by 2020 the urban-rural divide would come down substantially and villages would turn into major economic entities providing employment to millions.

The former President today spoke on ‘Ignited Mind: Power of the Nation’ at Delhi Public School, Dimapur which was also attended by former UGC chairman Prof Yashpal.

The questions posed by students ranged from terrorism to employment, global warming to stem cell research and missile technology.

When a student asked whether he regards his elevation to Rashtrapati Bhavan or success of Pokhran tests as his success story in life, Dr Kalam quipped neither of them satisfied him.

But his research findings on carbon to make lighter materials to fly missiles gave him highest satisfaction since the same materials were used by a Hyderabad hospital to make callipers for physically handicapped children who earlier found it difficult to walk with heavy callipers. Eminent scientist Prof Yashpal asserted that the teachers must listen and learn from students to teach them properly. – PTI
