Poll process for Outer Manipur seat set rolling

IMPHAL, Mar 28: The independent candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Valley Rose Hungyo today filed her nomination for fighting the Outer Manipur seat, while seeking the votes of the people of Manipur and promising to fulfill their expectations. Speaking to media persons, Valley Rose maintained that successive governments had failed miserably to govern on all fronts during the last few decades and had not safeguarded the lives and properties of the citizens. The social fabric had been fragmented to pieces and the seeds of hatred sown deeply among different groups of people, she said.

The weak and the poor have been discriminated and further marginalised with the gap between the rich and the poor widening, she said adding that the land has been ruled by lawlessness and rights violation is the least concern for any group perpetrating it.

She further promised that if she gets elected with the love and support of the people she would work for the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 (AFSPA) and would also promote social harmony among all communities living in Manipur to ensure peaceful co-existence in the region.

She also called for a good relationship with all the neighbouring states and checking of illegal migration in the north-eastern states, specially Manipur. No voting and contesting rights should be given to illegal migrants, she maintained.

The citizens of 7 A/c in Thoubal district and Jiribam A/c who are now in No-II Outer Parliamentary constituency can only vote but not contest, which is deprivation of their democratic rights, she observed while asking for arrangements made for them to exercise their franchise equally as other citizens of the country. She also called for separate tribal/hill land laws based on the traditional system of land management.

She further said that any work for development programmes including dams, and whatever works the government decides to take up should be done only with the prior consent of the people and implementation of all welfare and development programmes should be as per the needs of the people.

Valley Rose Hungyo was born at Jawai village in Senapati district and will contest in the 15th Lok Sabha elections 2009 from the No. II Outer Manipur (ST) Parliamentary constituency as an independent candidate. - Imphal Free Press

Manipur outfit claims responsibility over trader killing

IMPHAL, March 28 – Manipur outfit Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), in a press release, last night claimed responsibility for the killing of Deepak Gupta, a trader of Thangal Bazar, who was shot dead in his shop on March 23.

The release said the businessman was killed for stubbornly refusing to pay the tax his business owed to the organisation for three complete years.

It said Deepak and his father Sunder Gupta had been warned several times to clear their tax dues to KYKL but they deliberately ignored the warning. One of the warning was a hand grenade delivered to them, it said. The release said all those doing business in Kangleipak will have to obey the law of the land and pay their taxes as per the law of the land.
