IMPHAL, Mar 29 : Following the killing of some people from the Zeliangrong community reportedly by DHG (Jewel Gorlosa group) a few days back in Haflong area of North Cachar Hills, many Zeliangrong people have been fleeing their homesteads and taking shelter in Tousem area. Meanwhile the State Government has written to the Government of Assam to control the situation. An official source informed The Sangai Express that the Chief Secretary has written to his counterpart of Assam to control the situation in North Cachar Hills yesterday.
On the other hand, according to information received from District Police Tamenglong, more people fleeing from Haflong have been arriving at Tousem range.
It is reported that SDO Tousem has left today for the place where the displaced people are taking shelter.
Most of the people taking shelter at Tousem are women and children, informed the source while adding that the district administration has been doing all possible works for the displaced persons. Till this morning, the number of people who arrived at Tousem from Haflong is 300, at Mandu 235, at Phaklong is 100 , at Njukuak 85 , at Puram 83 and at Diegie 33, informed another source. So far the number of people killed in the violent incidents of North Cachar Hills has reached seven. The first incident of killing took place on March 11.
Meanwhile, the Zeliang-rong Students’ Union Mani- pur has appealed to the State Government to assess the condition of the displaced people currently taking shelter at Tousem range.
Relief appeal : Convenor of the Zeliangrong Students’ Union (Tousem Area) Elei-long Newme has appealed to the State authorities to extend relief material to Ze- liangrong refugees who are taking shelter at relief camps in Tousem sub- division of Tamenglong , reports our Jiri correspondent. Eleilong informed that many people belonging to the Zeliangrong community had been taking refuge at relief camps after they were displaced from their new Cachar Hills homes owing to alleged onslaught by DHD (J) militants.

Rape accused jailed | S Singlianmang Guite
Lamka, Mar 29: The forty-year-old man who was allegedly caught red-handed while attempting to rape a minor girl at Pearsonmun on Friday was sent to jail after he was apprehended by the local police last-night, police sources said.
Booked under 30 (3) CCP-PS under section 354/377/511 IPC, S Kamsuan Ngaihte, a resident of Pearsonmun was sent to Sajiwa Jail in Imphal.
Worried over the incident that was witnessed in their village, women folk of the village under the aegis of Zomi Mothers’ Association, Pearsonmun Unit today undertook a mass protest rally along the length and breadth of their village.
Women, young and old alike took to the streets with placards condemning the frequent molestation of women in general and the incident a couple of days back at their village in particular.
