Students in Lamka rally against Burmese Junta

Lamka, Oct 11: Taking a grim note over the recent crackdown on pro-democracy movement of Burma/Myanmar by the military Junta, thousands of students in their school attire took to the streets here today, expresses solidarity to the Burmese people and pledge the military to immediate install democracy in Burma.

The rally initiated by the Zomi Students’ Federation, was attended by leaders of Zomi Council, Hmar Inpui, KSO, SSPP, CDSU and Churachandpur District Private Schools. Besides, a good number of Burmese citizens under the banner of Burma Solidarity Organization, adorn with the pro-democratic flags and banner also attended the rally and choke

In his speech, Kothura, vice president of the Burma Solidarity Organisation talk at length how the military has time and again brutally suppressed the pro-democratic movement of the Burmese people. He also calls upon the international community and the Indian government in particular to adopt a more rigid stand on the issue, saying the restoration of Democracy in Myanmar will not only be a benefit to the citizens of Burma but to the whole world. To amplify his claimed, Kothura has categorically maintained that the mess of Heroine and Drugs India has encountered today will continue as long as the military Junta is in power. In addition Kothura calls on the government of India to immediately cease all forms of assistance and further investment with the Junta.

Describing to the students, the democratic society has bestowed on them, Kothura extend his call to the students and request each of them to take the plight of their counterparts in Burma to their parents. “Please tell them to support the struggle for restoration of Democracy in your neighboring country” he said, adding their counterparts in Burma too longs for the rights they have enjoyed.

Expressing the grief, descendants of Zo in India has share with their fellow ZOs in Myanmar, LB Sona, Chairman of Zomi Council said, “We share with you, as we gathered here, the misery and agony you all were subjected to by the military Junta.”

Sona along with his counterpart in Hmar Inpui also plunge heavily on the stand India has so far adopted with the development in Burma. “India being the largest democracy in the world has to do more than what it has done so far,” is the word repeated time and again by the leaders.

“The stand adopted by the Indian government is too soft a stand for India,” the Zomi apex body Chairman said, even as he pledges the Junta to heed on the pressure mounted by the international community for immediate restoration of democracy in Burma.

Leaders from Siamsinpawlpi GHQ, KSO/CCpur, CDSU and ZSF took side on the Burmese populace and calls on the Junta to release all jailed pro-democratic activist, including the NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

A strongly worded pledge undertaken by the rallyist, in support of the pro-democratic movement in Burma express solidarity to the movement and demands unconditional release of NLD President Aung San Suu Kyi, Zomi National Congress (ZNC) President Pu Cin Sian Thang and other activist by the Junta. It also pledge on the United Nations, ASEAN and Government of India to take immediate constructive measures to end the forty-five years of iron fisted military rule in Burma once and for all in the true spirit of democracy.
