Th Muivah in New Delhi for crucial talks | India’s silence on Myanmar crisis draws flak

Newmai News Network

Dimapur, Oct 7: Three days after threatening to abrogate the ongoing cea-sefire by the NSCN-IM, the rebel group’s general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah left Dimapur for New Delhi on Saturday and might even catch a Europe bound flight after October 10.

Disclosing this today in Dimapur, a well placed sour-ce in the NSCN-IM’s MIP informed NNN that next round of talks between the Govt of India and the NSCN-IM is slated for October 10 for which the NSCN-IM leader is in New Delhi now.

The next move of Th Muivah depends on the si-tuation and the outcome of the talks, added the source. the source also said that the NSCN-IM supremo “may catch a Europe bound flight” any day after Octo-ber 10 depending on the forthcoming talks and situa-tion. The NSCN-IM is ex- tremely agitated with the government of India these days for various reasons.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that NSCN-IM chairman Isak Chisi Swu had “sneaked” out of India few days ago. The confir-mation was made amidst confusing reports of Isak Swu’s “sneaking out of In-dia” but where ? There have been speculations doing the round in the last few days that Swu had left India for “unknown destination”.

It has been confirmed that on September 29 the NSCN-IM chairman left Di-mapur and headed for Thai- land. But which route the NSCN-IM top leader took while “sneaking,” is still ob-scure. as per report in a na- tional daily Isak Swu lea-ving India through Megha- laya could not be ruled out.

All these developments have cropped up amidst hightened tension in Naga-land. NSCN-IM’s Ceasefire Monitoring Cell convenor Phumthing Shimrang had fumed on October 3 while threatening to pull out of the ongoing ceasefire.

Opining that the govt of India’s approach to the issue is reminescent to act of “Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”, Phumthing said that there was no point of the existence of the ceasefire. “Let them hold talks in New Delhi and we will fight here,” was how he had roared on October 3 while talking to media persons in Dimapur.

The NSCN-IM leader also accused govt of India and Indian security forces of tactfully creating problems which in the public concept, the Assam Rifles/Indian security forces appear to be peace maker while the Nagas are reduced to “villains and bad boys”.

On the otherhand, Deputy Kilonser of Isak-Muivah group of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM), Dr. P Mor today alleged the Government of India of patronizing the rival faction and also abetting internal clashes between the Naga underground factions.

Talking to NNN, the NSCN-IM Deputy Kilonser expressed that the NSCN-IM, which has been involving in peace parleys with the Government of India for more then a decade, cannot fully trust the Centre as it is not showing any sincerity in solving the Naga issue.

Expressing that the NSCN-IM is on red alert to check the move of the Government of India to patronize the rival faction, Dr. Mor said the ongoing ceasefire deal can breakdown anytime as there has neither been any progress in the talks nor is the GoI stopping to patronize the rival factions. He also revealed that after the declaration of the ‘indefinite cease fire’ between the two sides at Dimapur, first Indo-Naga peace is likely to held in a third country during the third week of this month.

He also confirmed that their president (chairman) Isak Chisi Swu had already left for a third country in South Asia. however he refrained from revealing the country. He also said that their Prime Minister, Thuingaleng Muivah is also likely to leave for a European country shortly.

India’s silence on Myanmar crisis draws flak

Imphal, Oct 7: The president of Indian Justice Party, All India Con- federation of SC/ST Organisations and Lord Buddha Club, Dr. Udit Raj, express-ed the deep shock that the stand of Indian Government is very deplorable in case of Burma renamed Myanmar by Junta.

Earlier stand taken by government of India that it was an internal matter was really a diplomatic failure, he said adding that hundreds of thousands of citi- zens and Monks are being tortured and killed; army has displaced Monks from their monasteries and pagodas, innocent citizens beg- ging for their lives and constricting basic human rights like freedom of ex-pression, speech etc.

according to a release issued to the press by national secretary of All India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations M Chandra, the President of All India Christian Council, Dr. Joseph D’souza, condemned brutal crackdown against peaceful demonstrations by Buddhist monks and the common citizen for their legitimate rights.

The cry for justice and freedom of the people of Burma cannot be ignored by its present rulers. He said that the peaceful Buddhist institutions and pagodas were under attack and most of the pagodas have no monks present now as hundreds of protesting monks have disappeared.

This is an assault of religious freedom in a neigh- bouring nation and Indian Government can’t be neutral, said Dr. D’souza.

Burma had its cultural, political and spiritual relationship with India for abo- ut four to five decades. In addition, Burma is a neighbouring country and hence Indian government is more responsible to act fast to bri-ng about peace and demo- cracy in Burma. Burma is rich in oil and gas and if democracy is allowed to fun- ction, that will help India to get gas and petroleum products also, he suggested.

Dr. Udit Raj said that Aung San Kyi was elected with the thumping majority in 1988 but for last 12 years she has been under the hou-se arrest. Unfortunately, neither United Nations nor responsible Asian countries like China and India have done their duties to protect the democracy, he expressed.

Dr. D’souza also deman-ded Govt of India that over 70 thousand Burmese refugees in Indian territory sho- uld be accepted as refugees as per as norms of United Nations High Commission on Refugees. The pathetic conditions of Burmese refugees should be well looked after without any religious and racial bias.

United Nations Emissary, Gambari has not succeeded to quell the tension and fear mounting in Burma. Aung San Kyi is the most accepted leader who was given Jawahar Lal Nehru Award for International Understanding in February 1995. For succe-ssful and effective diplo- macy, this is the right time for India to throw the weight behind her to overthrow the Junta regime headed by Than Shwe. Indian Buddhists are not happy with stand taken by the Govt. of India, said Dr. Udit Raj. They say that how can India boast to be called the largest democracy in the world when it is silent in the matter of Myanmar.
