IMPHAL, Aug 25: An inter-State bus travelling from Guwahati to Imphal was looted at a spot known as Uchan Makhong along NH 39, about half a kilometre from Piphema town towards Kohima. Moreover, the robbers body searched some girl students of LMS Law College who were travelling in the bus in an aggressive manner thereby humiliating them.
The incident took place at about 2.30 am yesterday. The bus (MN01-1448) belonging to Royal Tours and Travels was carrying 29 passengers including 19 students of LMS Law College most of whom were girls.
The bus left Guwahati for Imphal at 8.30 pm of August 23. Incidentally, while they were having meal at Jakhlabandha the bus driver cautioned the passengers to be alert and to hide their money and valuable articles as it was possible that there might be robbers on the way.
As the bus resumed its journey to Imphal, it was going behind a truck. As the truck halted some distance away from Piphema town, the bus too halted.
It was at this moment that five armed persons came up to the vehicle and asked to lit up the inside of the bus. They also asked the driver to come down.
Then one of them demanded money. To this, the driver handed over his wallet saying that he had no money. Demanding money, another robber pulled down a lady sitting in the cabin.
Sensing the intention of the armed persons, the driver faked that he had not answer nature’s call so as to buy some time in the hope that other vehicles would arrive soon. But one of the robbers followed the driver and waited for him.
While the driver was away, the robbers came up t the bus and started body searching all the passengers. As the armed persons started frisking the girl students, there was a din inside the vehicle. Hearing the noise, the driver then rushed back to the bus and asked the passengers to bring some of their money.
Collecting the money produced by the passengers, the driver gave it to the robbers.
According to the driver, the total amount given to the robbers would be Rs 15,000 approximately. The armed persons also robbed three mobile phone handsets from the passengers.
The driver said that the five did not appear to be members of any UG group.
KCP cadres held : Troops of 29 Assam Rifles arrested four KCP cadres between Tengnoupal and Khongkhang on the Imphal Moreh route from a Tata Sumo yesterday, said the AR PRO. The cadres have been identified as S/S Cpl Siraj Alias Tmpok alias Parshuram (22) of Lamjao Awang Leikai, S/S L Cpl N Boynao alias Jiten (21) of Thoubal Leishangthem, S/S Pvt N Gopal Singh alias Nongdamba (22) of Sugnu and S/S Pvt O Nungshithoi of Dimapur.
