UNC may field Charenamei | IB official to visit Shillong

Imphal, Oct. 2: The United Naga Council (UNC) is likely to field sitting Lok Sabha MP Mani Charenamei from the Outer Manipur seat in next year’s parliamentary elections.

Charenamei, a former government official, contested the last parliamentary election as an Independent candidate and won the seat with strong support from the UNC, the apex body of the Naga community in Manipur.

He is also a strong supporter of the Naga integration issue and voted in favour of the UPA government during the recent confidence vote sought by the Manmohan Singh government on the nuclear deal.

“We have not taken any decision to support the sitting MP till now. But we have not reviewed our support to the MP,” UNC president Samson Ramei told The Telegraph.

IB official to visit Shillong

Shillong, Oct. 2: The additional director of the Intelligence Bureau, Agit Lal, will visit Shillong tomorrow to discuss the security situation in the state after the frequent bomb blasts in the country, including the ones in Agartala last night.

The Centre wants to monitor the movement of Bangladeshi militants who are suspected to have carried out the bomb attacks in Delhi on Saturday, since Agartala, Assam and Meghalaya share large borders with Bangladesh.

Cong flak for BJP: The Meghalaya PCC today slammed the BJP and the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, the party’s youth wing, for contradicting each other about the recent spate of attacks on Christians in Orissa and Karnataka.
