SOBHAPATI SAMOM | IMPHAL, Feb 21 – In a major breakthrough, the three missing Manipur officials who were abducted along with the Sub Divisional Officer and two others last week, have been rescued in the wee hours of Saturday. Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh conveyed this in a hurriedly called Press conference here during a two hour curfew relaxation in presence of senior Cabinet Ministers and DGP.
The curfew was imposed on Thursday in greater Imphal area to curb the public agitation against the brutal killing of Dr Th Kishan, SDO, Y Token, a Mandal in his office and A Rajen, driver, after being reportedly abducted along with three others from the office complex of Deputy Commissioner, Ukhrul on February 13 last.
The rescued officials are Ramthing Tangkhul, Ramsing Tangkhul and Kh Zimik, residents of Ukhrul district.
Though the lifeless and mutilated bodies of SDO and his two subordinates were recovered near Taphou village, 6 km south of Senapati district police headquarters on February 21, the whereabouts of the three individuals could not be established.
They were rescued from a place near Tolloi village in the wee hours today, Yumnam Joykumar, DGP Manipur said. Tolloi, around 110 km north of Imphal is a small hamlet under Ukhrul district. A police team has rushed to the village to escort them to Imphal on Saturday.
With the rescue of these officials, the Chief Minister expressed confidencet of solving the murders.
Reacting to the charter of demands of the striking Joint Action Committee, he said, I think 90 per cent of the demands were fulfilled. He appealed the victims’ families and Committee to claim the bodies and conduct the last rites.
In the wake of public agitation, the State authority has instituted an inquiry besides recommending a CBI probe into the incident and providing ex-gratia amount of Rs 10 and 5 lakh respectively and a civil service post to the wife of late SDO and next of kin of the two subordinates.
