Church strongly against polygamy in Nagaland

Dimapur, April 13 (MExN): The recent reported remark made by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio during his election campaign rally and reported in a local daily that “marrying and living with more than one wife is accepted in Naga society” has drawn sharp response from the CNBC and the Chakhesang Baptist Church, Kohima.

“The statement made which upholds polygamy and extra-marital affairs is unbiblical, damages the sanctity and destructive to the purity of Christian doctrines”, stated a joint note from Rev Dr VK Nuh, general secretary of CNBC and Rev Khrotso Mero, pastor of Chakhesang Baptist Church, Kohima. It was pointed out that the church is a “body of believing members of Jesus Christ who is the head of the church and therefore cannot accept its members to practice polygamous habit either in church or personal life or public life”.

The joint statement made it crystal clear that the “church is strongly against polygamy and it is the responsibility of every believer to promote and conduct Christian holiness and purity of biblical faith”.

Only one wife, Chang Union clarifies

The Chang Union of Kohima today issued a note in response to reports that DAN candidate to the Lok Sabha CM Chang “was keeping three wives”. The union in a statement by its executive chairman, A. Thangan Chang, clarified that CM Chang “has only one wife”, one Mrs. Tonchinglemla. The union then added that CM Chang “is no more living” with “his previous wife” as they are “divorced”.

Rio is Nagaland’s best ever Chief Minister: NCP

Dimapur, April 13 (MExN): The Nationalist Congress Party Nagaland today while coming out strongly in defense of its National general secretary P A Sangam also asserted that Neiphiu Rio is the best ever chief minister the state has ever had.

“We at the NCP Nagaland can proudly declare that the best chief minister Nagaland has ever had is the present chief minister, for his commendable achievements on all fronts particularly developmental activities throughout the length and breath of Nagaland specially in rural areas.”

Coming down heavily on the NPCC statements on the Rio – Sangma joint campaign in Nagaland the NCP Nagaland challenged the “wild and baseless allegations” hurled by the Congress. The NCP today said it is unfair on the part of NPCC to cast aspersions on a national political leader of the stature of P A Sangma.

The NCP in a note appended by its president Povotse Lohe reminded the NPCC that PA Sangma is “recognized not only at the national level but at the international level too” and has served as MP for 31 years and has also won nine consecutive termas from his constituency-Tura. Lohe also stated that Sangma is known for his yoe-man service to the political leders of the north east regardless of party affiliations. “Nobody can deny this fact,” the NCP asserted.

The NCP ridiculed the questions raised by NPCC regarding Sangma campaigning for the DAN consensus candidate. Lohe in the note asserted that Sangma “has every right to campaign for DAN” because NCP is a pre-poll alliance of DAN. “Therefore the wild allegations leveled against PA Sangma and the chief minister Neiphiu Rio by NPCC speaks volumes of their sheer jelousy and ulterior motives simply to mislead the general public,” Lohe stated while dismissing the allegations made by the NPCC.
“We advice the NPCC to refrain from resorting the malicious personal attacks on our leaders to avoid further misgivings,” Lohe further stated.
