IMPHAL, Apr 12 : With the Outer seat set to go to the polls on April 16, the Congress party today unleashed a volley of verbal assault against PDA candidate, Mani Charenamei while canvassing for the party at Thoubal district.
Addressing a huge gathering comprising of voters from Thoubal, Chandel and Churachandpur at Sugnu ground today, former Minister Francis Ngajokpa, appealed to all to vote for the Congress candidate Thangso Baite and added that the cry raised by Mani that the Congress led Government has not done anything to develop the hill districts is just a ploy to exploit the sentiments of the people.
Giving examples, Francis said that when he was the Education Minister a number of schools were built in the hill districts, under instructions from the Chief Minister. Charenamei on the other hand did not give a single pie from his fund to build a school in the hill districts.
The Congress led Government pumped in crores of rupees to build roads while a number of water supply schemes were taken up, he added. During his five year stint in Parliament, Charenamei did not spend even a single paise for the development of the hills, asserted Francis.
Charenamei may rant and shout that the Congress did not do anything for the hill districts, but the fact stands that it was him who did not do anything, added Francis.
Asserting he is a Naga from Manipur and that he stands for Manipur, MPCC (I) president Gaikhangam said that the designs to disintegrate Manipur will not succeed.
Even though there are two Nagas in the fray in the Outer seat, none of them will get any vote from his Constituency, Nungba which is a Naga dominated area, said Gaikhangam.
Thangso Baite is from the Kuki-Chin group.
On BJP, Gaikhangam, said though he cannot speak for other States, the fact stands, that they have been uprooted from Manipur.
Addressing the gathering, Works Minister K Ranjit said that though parties opposed to the Cong- ress may cook up allega- tions after allegations, the fact stands that he has been to places in the hill areas, where none of the Opposition members have ever been to.
Candidate Thangso Baite appealed to the gathering to cast their votes in favour of the Congress party.
