Economic blockade lifted | Mautam raffle on May 31

IMPHAL, May 24: Along with lifting of the indefinite economic blockade impo-sed along the National Highway 39 ‘officially’ with effect from 6 pm today following an understanding with the State Government, stranded goods laden trucks have started arriving at Imphal.

Naga Peoples’ Organisation, Senapati district and Senapati District Students’ Association had jointly imposed the indefinite econo- mic blockade in protest against non-release of PDS items for Senapati district and non-completion of the water supply schemes under the NLCPR project.

Announcing lifting of the economic blockade through a joint press statement, president of Naga Peoples’ Organisation, Se-napati district M Dili and president of Senapati District Students’ Association Kuba Peter said suspension of the economic blockade has been considered after serious deliberation on the note of ‘assurance and appeal’ given by three local MLAs of Senapati district with the consent of the Chief Minister and Ministers concerned in charge of PHE and FCS.

According to information received by the press, a joint meeting of representatives of the two apex bodies and the three MLAs namely TD Minister DD Thaisii, MLA Thoirii and MLA K Raina was held at the district headquarters of Sena- pati district to discuss demands of the two apex bodies.

During the course of the meeting, the Minister and the MLAs assured that provisions for supplying drin- king water to the people of Senapati district would be ensured within December and the quota of the PDS items like rice and the other essential commodities for the months of January to April would be released.

The MLAs further assured that an order issued by the FCS Department in this regard would be han-ded over and arrangements would be made to deposit the released PDS at the FCS godown at Senapati from where it would be distributed among the people with the consultation of the De-puty Commissioner of the district. Consequent to the lifting of the economic bloc-kade, stranded goods laden trucks have started arriving at Imphal.

Mautam raffle

IMPHAL, May 24: The Churachandpur Mautam Aid Relief Committee has advised ticket holders for the raffle draw, being or-ganised to assist people in the interior parts of Chu-rachandpur district who are reeling under the impact of bamboo flowering event, to ensure safe custody of the purchased ticket/s so as to claim the prizes without any complications. The draw would be held on May 31 at the Churachandpur Public Ground, informed the Committee’s chairman Thangboi Haokip.

39 prisoners hurt in Sajiwa jail skirmishes

IMPHAL, May 24: Tension brewing inside the prison complex of the Sajiwa Jail for the past few days suddenly erupted into a fierce clash this afternoon resulting in injury of varying degree to atleast 39 inmates.

The injured, who were brought to Jawaharlal Neh-ru Hospital included 12 PULF cadres, followed by nine PREPAK men, seven KYKL, six undertrial priso-ners, two KCP activists and one each belonging to the UNLF, PLA and KRA (U).

Of the injured, condition of one Loya of the PREPAK is stated to be critical.

As report of the skir-mishes spread news- persons rushed to the de-tention centre where Jail of- ficials declined to comment what triggered the clash which, according to an in-formed source, witnessed the inmates use iron bars, bottles, bricks, molotov-cocktail (petrol bomb) and other blunt weapons.

During an interaction with a team of media per-sons at JN Hospital one Lai- shram Korou alias Homen (28) s/o Beikam recounted that on May 21 an inmate misbehaved with one of two female visitors and was in-tercepted by other infuria- ted prisoners.

In the aftermath of the said incident, a joint mee-ting of inmates resolved to bar interview/contact of the particular individual for 15 days but decision to prohi-bit contact was defied as reports sneaked in that for- malities for visiting the ac-cused inmate had been processed leading to ano-ther hurriedly convened meeting this morning.

Even though heated and abusive languages were ex-changed during the meeting an understanding was arri-ved at and the inmates re- turned to their respective cells (Sectors), continued the injured Korou who con-tended that a few minutes later around 100 imprisoned underground cadres belonging to different outfits stormed towards the Sector I block that houses activists of the KYKL, UNLF, PULF (MI Khan), KCP (GS) and the PREPAK

The nearly 100-strong group using all available weapons resorted to smashing and setting ablaze jail articles like furniture, beds, chairs etc by lobbing the petrol bombs apart from targeting a particular group of prisoners lodged in Sector I.

A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said security manning the jail that house over 400 inmates are taking sharp vigil to control the situation.

He said a high level inquiry might be initiated very soon to establish circumstances leading to the incident particularly the lapses, if any, on the part of security to control the sudden riot.

Senior officials of state police including the Direc-tor General (Prisons) AK Parashar, Inspector General of Police (L&O-1) Karnajit and SP (IE) Th Radhe-shyam, besides the 109 CRPF rushing additional forces to control the si-tuation.

Moreover, a team of Manipur Fire Service also arrived at the scene and was seen dousing the flame for nearly an hour.
Heingang police have registered an FIR case on the matter and investigation is on.
“So far we have gathered the names of 39 persons injured in the riot”, an officer of Heingang police station, said.
