Imphal, July 4: Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh unveiled a masterplan on Rathyatra today to make Imphal a modern and green city in the next few years.
Inaugurating three bridges here today, Ibobi Singh said Imphal would have a complete makeover with proper parking facilities, drainage system and a solid waste management plant.
He said the government has acquired a plot of 80 acres at Lamdeng in Imphal West for a solid waste management plant.
“We are finalising the plan to make Imphal a modern city. Tree plantation on a massive scale will start soon. All the roads within the greater Imphal area would be widened,” Ibobi Singh said.
The plans include shifting of roadside vendors to the women’s market after the occupants of the sheds move to the newly constructed bazars, construction of a multi-storeyed parking space after shifting the electricity department to the complex of the engineering departments in another part of the city.
He said the government was planning to develop a green park after the Imphal Central Jail was shifted to Sajiwa Jail.
“The government also decided to beautify the Nambul river, which flows through the city. Windows in buildings along the river would not be allowed to be kept open to prevent people from throwing waste into the water,” Ibobi Singh said.
He said the government was considering a legislation to punish those throwing garbage into the river and elsewhere in the city.
Ibobi Singh, however, said the comprehensive plan for the makeover was yet to be finalised. “I am consulting experts to make the plan keeping in mind the fact that the city would expand manifold in the next 50 years,” he said.
Reacting to allegations from the Opposition parties that the government has been misutilising funds, the chief minister claimed that the Planning Commission was convinced otherwise.
