IMPHAL, June 30 – Annoyed with too many bandhs and blockades in Manipur which adversely affected the people, Manipur Government has hired advocates to file civil suits and recover the losses incurred from the sponsors of such type of agitations.
It has been calculated that Manipur incurred a whopping loss of Rs 1,319.96 crore due to bandhs and blockades during the period 2004 to January 27, 2007.
The State Cabinet had earlier declared bandhs as illegal and unconstitutional. It has also decreed that the losses due to bandhs should be recovered from the bandh sponsors.
According to the order of the Law secretary, the four advocates will file civil suits against bandh, blockade, strikes and economic blockade organisers and recover from them the amount lost due to the agitation. The source said that the identity of the bandh sponsors, their office bearers, etc, will be unearthed by the Government and the list will be submitted to the panel of four advocates to take up the necessary legal procedure.
