NREGS launched at Saikhul village

IMPHAL, Jul 1: Villagers of Khongnangpokpi village under Saikhul block of Senapati district today witnessed the launching of NREGS.

Saikhul Assembly constituency MLA, Doukhongmang Khongsai today launch the programme in the village.

According to elders of the village gathered at the launching function, before today none of the government authorities had taken up any developmental works in the village.

This was the first ever developmental work taken up in the village, they said while expressing gratitude to the MLA and officers who came to the village and looked into the grievances of the villagers.

Doukhongmang, who graced the launching function as chief guest, announced the various developmental works to be taken up at the village and its surroundings under various schemes.

He said that for sorting out the water problem in the village, an MI dam would be constructed at Hangel Lok with funding from the AIBP through the NABARD. Black topping from Maphou village to Leikinthabi would also be taken up soon with funds amounting of Rs. 80 lakhs which had already been earmarked for it in the state plan, he revealed.

The MLA also said that NREGS was not only bringing development to the village but also provided job opportunities to the villagers. This scheme would bring a change in the village, he assured while appealing to the villagers to participate in the works sincerely and help in bringing about a revolution in the village in the field of development.

He further appealed to the militants not to cause any hinderance in the working of the NREGS considering that it was for the poor villagers of the state.

The MLA also appealed to the village authorities and village chief to have closer look at the work of the villagers under NREGS.

The MLA later distributed job cards to 55 villagers and inaugurated the construction of the inter-village road from Khongnangpokpi to Leikinthabi.

Speaking at the function, SDO Saikhul, T Manihar said that out of 264 villages under the Saikhul development block, NREGS would be implemented in 15 villages in the first phase. Out of these 15 villages, three were in the Saikhul Assembly constituency, he added.

He also said that for construction of IVR (inter-village road) at Leikinthabi funds amounting to Rs. 67.849 lakhs had already been sanctioned.
