Bamboo flowering not alarming in NE, says expert

AGARTALA, Jan 16 – The problem of gregarious bamboo flowering in the Northeastern States is not alarming and the situation is under control, according to an expert. “Nothing alarming has happened due to well-coordinated efforts by the Ministry as well as by the affected State Governments,” Director General of Environment and Forests AK Johari told reporters here yesterday.

Johari and a group of officials of the Ministry of Forest and Environment and principal chief conservators of forests of the region on Wednesday held a meeting here to review the situation arising out of bamboo flowering.

The situation in Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur, the States worst affected due to massive bamboo flowering, has improved significantly, Johari said.

Eighty per cent of the total bamboo cultivated areas in Tripura, covering about 8,000 sq km, was affected due to bamboo flowering during the last four years.

Of the total area of bamboo cultivation in Mizoram, around 85-90 per cent witnessed flowering during the last three years, he said.

Bamboo flowering, which occured at regular intervals, often create ecological and economic problems in North East. – PTI
