PM calls for private investment in R&D

SHILLONG, Jan 3 – Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today urged the private sector to invest more in research and development, while promising that the government would double its allocation in this key area. Terming scientific research and teaching as another engagement to modernize the countrys traditional society, Singh said the knowledge base in India was widening and was no more a preserve of the few. He added that the challenge before the country was to ensure that modern education touches all, and at the same time the pursuit of excellence is encouraged and cherished.

Singh said that the government was trying its best to make science attractive to the youth and has invested in the creation of 30 new central universities, five new Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, eight new Indian Institutes of Technology and 20 new Indian Institutes of Information Technology.

The government he added was also studying proposals from the Ministry of Science and Technology to adopt a Cancer Research Institute in Chennai, and an Institute for Advanced Study in Science and Technology in Guwahati.

Singh informed that the budget outlay for the Ministries of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences has been trebled during the last four-year period. Similarly the government has begun several promotional measures to strengthen research and development base in the county with an increase in reasearch fellowship for doctoral students.

Meanwhile, over 2000 scientists and other delegates from India and abroad converged here for the Indian Science Congress and will present their research papers for discussions during the next five days.
