NE should make and export bamboo toothpicks: Prof Rappai

Imphal, February 03 2009: THE MOST abundant resource of the North Eastern region, specially Manipur, which is the bamboo can be used in making good quality toothpicks and can be exported abroad, observed Prof MV Rappai of Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi. The professor was speaking at a function held at Hotel Imphal here today to accord him a warm reception organised by the Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur.

Prof Rappai further said that there is a National Bamboo Mission, of which main objective is to utilise the bamboo at the maximum.

The bamboos grow most abundantly in the North Eastern region.

He wondered how many people of the region have heard of the Mission and how much benefits the people have received from it.

Bamboo can help in bringing economic development in the North Eastern region.

It can be used in making toothpicks.

China exports huge bulks of toothpicks in different designs made out of bamboo, he said.

MLA Yengkhom Surchandra and Director Education (S), M Harekrishna graced the function as chief guest and guest of honour respectively.

MLA Mairembam Prithviraj presided over the function.

Professor DS Sharma, Retd Principal, DM College of Sciences also participated in the function as special invitee.

In his speech as chief guest, Surchandra said that studying the working principles of the Chinese has become very important as China is developing at a fast pace in the field of economy in the world.

The role of Prof MV Rappai in the Indian economy is very important, he added.

MV Rappai talked on 'Growing influence of China in South-East Asia; Impact on North Easter India'.

In his speech he said that the world is becoming smaller and smaller today with the growing trend of development.

Other presidium members also expressed their views on the changing trends of economy in the modern wolrd in today's programme.
