P Chidambaram to visit Manipur, Nagaland today

February 3, 2009: New Delhi : Concerned over insurgent activities in the northeast, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram is visiting Manipur and Nagaland tomorrow to have a first hand account of the security situation in the two troubled states. Chidambaram will hold a security review meeting at the Imphal secretariat with Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and senior officials.

Manipur has witnessed repeated violence by nearly a dozen militant groups in the recent past claiming several lives. The state, bordering Myanmar, has seen a number of kidnapping cases and peddling of drugs which find their way easily from across the porous border.
From Imphal, Chidambaram will fly to Nagaland’s commercial capital Dimapur where he would hold a security review meeting at the Police Training Academy at Chumukedima. The minister is keen on finding a permanent political solution to the six-decades-old Naga insurgency problem and had said that talks with NSCN-IM would continue.

Chidambaram is likely to emphasise on the need for ensuring strict enforcement of the ceasefire ground rules. The issue of infighting between rival Naga groups has been a matter of anguish for the Home Ministry.

This will be Chidambaram’s second visit to the northeast after taking over charge. To review the security situation in Assam with the Unified Command he visited the state on New Year day when three blasts rocked the main city of Guwahati claiming six lives.
