4 parties form alliance in Manipur to combat Cong

IMPHAL, March 5 – Four opposition political parties joined hands on Wednesday to form a political alliance to combat the ruling Congress in the forthcoming 15th Lok Sabha poll in Manipur next month. Manipur will go to polls on April 16 and 22 respectively. A meeting of leaders of four parties – Manipur People's Party, The Nationalist Congress Party, National People Party and Manipur State Congress Party was held in this regard though they are yet to name the alliance.

The newly-formed alliance which is said to have been formed considering the prevailing situation in the State, also revealed the names of the candidates who will be fighting in the coming Lok Sabha polls, from both Inner and the Outer parliamentary constituencies in this volatile border State.

The common candidates of the alliance are Prof N Mohendro for Inner parliamentary seat and LB Sona for the Outer parliamentary seat.

The political heavyweights of these parties also disclosed that the two candidates for the coming election were chosen after unanimous decision by the alliance. Among the common points in the agenda, the focus would be on to bring transparency in the administration, safeguarding of the territorial integrity of the state and the development of the socio-economic conditions of the people of the State.

Inviting suggestions from the public, most of the speakers who addressed the gathering charged that the state is going through a rough phase due to mismanagement of the Congress-led Secular Progressive Front government and there is a need to bring about a change in the political front.

According to the party leaders, the manifesto as well as the name of the newly-formed alliance would soon be released.

Meanwhile, the alliance is yet to approach the CPI (M) to for its support. Feelers were also reportedly sent for it, sources added.
