US sheds 6,51,000 jobs in Feb; jobless rate touch 25-yr high

Washington, Mar 6 (PTI) The United States saw a staggering 6,51,000 job losses in February, pushing the unemployment rate to a 25-year-high of 8.1 per cent, as the nation continued to grapple with a deepening recession. Further, the world's largest economy shed a whopping 2.6 million jobs in the past four months, the latest data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed.

"Nonfarm payroll employment continued to fall sharply in February (-651,000), and the unemployment rate rose from 7.6 to 8.1 per cent," BLS, which is part of the US Labor Department, said in a statement.

Payroll employment has declined by 2.6 million in the past four months, it added.

The jobless rate of 8.1 per cent is reportedly the highest since December 1983.

Moreover, the statistics revealed that the number of unemployed persons shot up by 8,51,000 to 12.5 million last month. "Over the past 12 months, the number of unemployed persons has increased by about five million...," the statement said.

In February, job losses were large and widespread "across nearly all major industry sectors". PTI

Gandhi's items sold for USD 2.096 mn, including commission

New York, Mar 6 (PTI) Mahatma Gandhi's iconic round eye glasses and other personal belongings fetched USD 2.096 million, including commission, Antiquorum Auctioneers announced today and said it was pleased that the objects will be returning to India.
Indian business magnate Vijay Mallya had bought the articles for USD 1.8 million and said "he bidded for the country".

A day after the auction that stirred worldwide interest, Antiquorum today said the star lot at the auction was "indisputably" Gandhi's pocket watch, sandals, glasses, bowl and thali, which sold for an astounding USD 2,096 million.

"The sale of the spiritual and political leader of India's possessions had stirred worldwide interest and had been closely watched by collectors and supporters of Gandhi worldwide," Antiquorum Auctioneers chairman Robert Maron said in a statement. PTI
