National | Bangalore ‘moral cops’ target man for wearing sleeveless tees

Bangalore: 'Moral police' seem to be on the prowl again on Bangalore's streets. This time the target was a man - for wearing sleeveless tees! Advocate and activist Jagdeesh B.N. was attacked on Sunday by five people, on Millers Road in the heart of the city, apparently for wearing a sleeveless t-shirt. The assault comes after a lull which followed 10 incidents of verbal and physical abuse on women in the tech hub by 'moral brigade' in recent times.

"I was on my way back home, riding my cycle at around 4.45 p.m. Sunday. Five people stopped me near the Aiyyappa temple on Millers Road. They hurled abuses at me in Kannada (the language spoken by majority of the people in the state) and warned me for wearing a sleeveless t-shirt," Jagdeesh told IANS.

Jagdeesh is one of the founder members of Fearless Karnataka/Nirbhaya Karnataka group that spearheaded the movement against increasing attacks on women by moral police in Bangalore and other parts of the state.

"They used foul language and questioned me for wearing a sleeveless t-shirt. But when I replied in Kannada, they realised that I am a local. By the time I tried to call up police on my cell phone, they ran away," Jagdeesh said.

The advocate has filed a complaint with the police, who said they are investigating the matter. "No arrest has been made," a police spokesperson said.

Jagdeesh asserted that he was attacked not for being an activist. The FK/NK group was launched on February 26.

On Friday, a woman was attacked on M.G. Road, a popular hangout.

Since February 17, when the first attack on a woman at the upscale Indiranagar area happened, around 10 cases of such incidents have been reported from different areas of the city. All the cases follow a pattern as motorcycle borne attackers physically and verbally abuse women for wearing western outfits. "If the situation does not improve, we have to carry forward our movement till the city becomes safe for one and all," Shakun Mohini, a member of Fearless Karnataka, said.

On the M.G. Road attack, police said: "We've registered a case and investigations are on." (IANS)

Pawar, daughter find place in NCP list

Mumbai: Union Agriculture Minister and NCP president Sharad Pawar and his daughter Supriya Sule figure in the first list of 17 candidates announced by the party after the seat sharing arrangement with ally Congress was formalised on Monday.

Maharashtra NCP president RR Patil told reporters that the Amravati (SC) seat has been left for the RPI (Gavai group).

Earlier in the day in New Delhi, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel of NCP and Defence Minister A K Antony of Congress announced that the seat sharing arrangement between the two parties was formalised.

NCP will contest 22 seats and Congress 26. The seat sharing arrangement was arrived at following a month-long closed-door talks involving hard bargaining by the two allies. NCP had demanded equal seats and wanted to contest 24 out of the total 48 seats.

Pawar will contest from Maadha in Solapur district after vacating his traditional Baramati constituency for his daughter and political heir Supriya Sule, presently a Rajya Sabha member. Other prominent candidates include Sameer Bhujbal, son of Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal from Nashik, Sanjeev Naik, son of Excise Minister Ganesh Naik from Thane, Deputy Chairman in the Legislative Council Vasant Davkhare from Kalyan.

Kasab admits he is from Pakistan

Mumbai: Ajmal Kasab, the lone gunman arrested in the Mumbai terror attacks, on Monday accepted before the trial judge that he was a Pakistani national and told the court he is fine with government-provided lawyer to defend him.

21-year-old Kasab appeared before special judge M L Tahiliyani via video link from the Arthur Road jail where he is presently lodged in a high security cell giving the media the first glimpse of the surviving terrorist who along with his nine accomplices were involved in the carnage.

Tahiliyani asked Kasab to identify himself and asked him where he was from. Kasab replied that he was from Faridkot, in Pakistan's Punjab province.

Wearing a grey T-shirt, Kasab with a light beard and moustache and dishevelled hair when asked by the court if he wanted a lawyer for the trial, said, "If there will be a trial then I will need a lawyer." Kasab was earlier asked if he had a lawyer to which Kasab said , "As of now I don't have one."

Asked by the judge if he had any preference, he said, "Could you just call the lawyer who appeared on my behalf on November 27?"

The court informed him that he had no lawyer representing him during his first and only court appearance and if he is agreeable to a government-appointed lawyer.

"Theek hai (all right)," Kasab said, speaking in Hindi during the court appearance.

When asked by the judge if he knew him, Kasab replied in English, "I don't."

Subsequently, Judge Tahiliyani introduced himself, "I am the judge who will conduct the trial in your case." Hearing this Kasab smiled and replied, "Namaste". (PTI)

BJP backs Varun, says he will contest polls

New Delhi: A defiant BJP on Monday rejected the Election Commission's advice to it not not to nominate Varun Gandhi as candidate in the Lok Sabha elections and threw its full weight behind his candidature in Pilibhit.

The young member of the Gandhi family also put up a defiant posture accusing the EC of acting in "haste" and going beyond its "jurisdiction", "pressurised by political considerations".

The morning after the EC's unprecedented action of recommending to BJP that Varun not be nominated as its candidate in the elections in view of his hate speeches, top leaders of the party met at the residence of senior leader L K Advani and decided to take on the Commission.

"He (Varun) is our candidate. We have turned down the advice (of the EC) because it does not have the right to give such an advice," party spokesman Balbir Punj told reporters after meeting Varun at his residence.

In a no-holds-barred attack on the EC, Punj said the EC does not have the technical knowhow to verify the authenticity of the CD containing the speeches of Varun, which he said should have been done by a neutral expert.

While BJP attacked the EC's decision, the advice was hailed by its ally JD(U) and rivals Congress and Samajwadi Party. Varun also got a piece of advice from his cousin Priyanka who asked him to read the 'Gita' and understand it properly.

Punj said while Varun has been targeted by the EC, some others who have been convicted of murders and under TADA or are facing serious charges have been allowed to contest and even allowed to become ministers.

In this context, the BJP spokesman referred to Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar, who are accused in 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases and M K Subba, whose nationality is in question.

"The EC has not said a word about how ministers who have been convicted of murders and facing worst type of corruption charges contest elections," he said.

BJP leader Arun Jaitley said EC's advice does not come under the ambit of law. "But today, before even a chargesheet has been filed, leave alone being convicted, to disqualify a person by suggesting and pressurising the party is not within the powers of the EC," he said.

Jaitley said he would have welcomed EC's advice if it had given a similar advice to Samajwadi Party not to nominate persons accused under TADA and the UPA not to field those convicted of murder.

While he said he was not questioning the Commission's intention but the jurisdiction, Punj suggested that the EC advice had something to do with the "proximity" of the Chief Election Commissioner-designate Navin Chawla to Congress and the strained relations between Sonia Gandhi and Varun's mother Maneka Gandhi.

BJP chief Rajnath Singh said Varun will remain the party's candidate and leaders would campaign for him.

With his party standing by him, Varun, who will be making his electoral debut, said the EC action was in "utter disregard of the principles of natural justice" as it had passed the censure "without any attempt to ascertain the truth". (PTI)
