Reluctant Congress party readies itself to go solo in the general elections

Akash Bisht, Hardnews, Delhi | After being treated shoddily by its allies in the seat sharing arrangement, Congress is trying to make its electoral misery of having to contest on its own look a virtue. Leaders of the party are strenuously trying to explain to their cadres and the media about how their decision to go solo in high population areas like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar- the two states that send 120 MPs to the parliament- could really work to their advantage. In 2004 elections, Congress got an embarrassing 12 seats, but their allies performed magnificently helping to return to power.

A senior party General Secretary in his off the record briefing claimed that the decision to go alone in these two states, where seat sharing talks were going for the last few months, was also prompted by the simple fact that Congress had shrunk wherever they had an alliance with a regional party. “Supporting SP and BSP in UP and RJD in Bihar to keep BJP out of power has had adverse effect on the ground. Our objective is to expand the party now,” he said.

After collapse of the talks with regional leaders like Lalu Prasad Yadav and Mulayam Singh, the Congress has been searching for candidates to carry out its promise to fight bulk of the seats in these states. It has decided to field 36 candidates in Bihar on the SC, ST, Minorities and OBC seats while they have already announced 24 seats in UP. More seats are to be announced later. Strong candidates are being identified for the Congress list.

Party sources said that this decision to contest all the seats has fueled enthusiasm amongst the party workers across these two states. Putting rest to the debate on whether by fielding contestants in UP and Bihar will help the communal parties to come to power, a senior Congress leader told Hardnews that RJD workers feel that this move would rather help in cutting votes of the upper caste candidates, which in turn could benefit RJD and LJP.

Additionally, the party is in talks with several small political outfits in these states to increase their vote share and even more seats. The party is open to all kinds of post-poll alliances, but in case nothing works out then they are even ready to sit in the opposition. However, the party is looking more confident to do better than they were in 2004.

The mood at the party headquarters is upbeat and several new entrants are joining the party with each passing day. Businessman Salim Sherwani, and cricketer Madan Lal are few of the names that have joined recently.
