No designated camps in Manipur, claims IG AR

imphal, Mar 25: Rejecting the allegations that there are three designated camps of the NSCN (IM) in Manipur, IGAR (South) Maj Gen AK Choudhury has today claimed that there is no such camps in Manipur.

The PRO of the Assam Rifles while talking to The Sangai Express during the height of the stand off between the Assam Rifles and the NSCN (IM) over a camp at Siroy village had stated that three camps of the IM group have been ‘taken note of’ at Buning in Senapati, Oklong in Tamenglong and Phungchong in Chandel. The PRO, however, did explain that these are not designated camps adding that they have been there for the past many years before the ceasefire came into force.

Talking to the media during an interaction pro- gramme organised at its headquarters at Mantri-pukhri today, the IG said, “There is no.... I repeat....There is no designated IM or K camp in Manipur.”

Regarding the ‘non-designated’ camps, he said, “If locals and State Govt do not have any idea about it, how can I know it. We gather information from them,” he added.

“If we come across any such camps, we will take no time in vacating the cadres,” the IGAR (S) responded when queried about the presence of ‘any’ camp, irrespective of ‘designated’ or ‘non-designated’.

In a confident tone, the IGAR (S) said that Assam Rifles is even ready to take the media to the places where camps are reportedly located to clear any doubts.

Answering to questions on the interference of Kuki UG groups which have come under SoO in the coming Lok Sabha polls, the IGAR (S) said that action will be taken up against those groups which try to break the ceasefire ground rules.

The IG also lauded the State media stating that it has become fully matured and bold enough to become the ‘real’ fourth estate of democracy. Today, the State media is able to express its perception without fear of UGs, State Government and Security Forces, he added. Maintaining that the rate of violence is coming down in the State, Maj Gen Chaudhury said that it would guide the State towards the right direction and will bring a ‘change’. The Major General also urged the media to cover issues in far-flung areas of the State, so that the State Govt can take up corrective measures to develop these areas.

Moreh road blocked, general strike called

IMPHAL, Mar 25: Protesting the killing of an ‘innocent civilian’ whom the police claimed was an activist of the proscribed KYKL, local residents of Kakwa area erupted in violence and blocked the Imphal-Moreh Road for hours today.

Giving 48 hours deadline to the Government to effect the arrest and punishment of the security personnel involved in the killing, the JAC formed in protest of the killing has also announced its decision of imposing a general strike along National Highway 39 from Lilong to Singjamei with effect from midnight of today to mid-night of tomorrow (March 26).

Police claimed that 28-year old Thaodem Shanti- kumar alias Shanti son of late Ibochou of Kakwa Lam-daibung was killed by a combined force of Imphal West Police Commandos and personnel of 16 Assam Rifles during an encounter which took place at around 4.30 pm yesterday near the foothill of Tairenpokpi Maning under Lamshang Police Station.

Police also claimed that combined force have recovered one Sten gun loaded with some ammunition and a magazine of AK Rifles with 15 bullets from the possession of Shantikumar. However, refuting the police claim, the family members and the local residents have asserted that Shantikumar was an innocent person who was earning his livelihood as a construction worker. In protest against the killing, a large number of local residents came out at around 7 am today and blocked the stretch of the NH39 at Kakwa area. Afterward, the protestors were dispersed by the poli-ce along with firing tear gas canisters and the road block was cleared.

No more KRF cadres in KNF camps: PRO

IMPHAL, Mar 25: Cadres of the Kuki Revolutionary Front (KRF) who were taking refuge with the Kuki National Front (KNF) for sometime have been expelled as they violated the guidelines given. So KNF would no longer be responsible for any act of omission and commission of these KRF cadres, central PRO of KNF Roland Kuki has stated.

The PRO further said that in case of doubt spot verification of the matter could be carried out by the Joint Monitoring Group of the Suspension of Operation.

Talking to some medi-apersons at the tactical head quarters of the outfit today, Roland informed that following outbreak of cla-shes between KRA and KNF, villagers have been compelled to flee from Saikul area. So to restore normal-cy, KRF cadres have been given shelter by the KNF.

However, as the guidelines laid down for them were violated along with indulges in abduction of the secretary of Adimjati Ashram in December 2008 and other extortion activities, KRF cadres have been expelled. KNF has no idea where they (KRF cadres) are staying now, Roland said, adding that the charges of the security forces that the KNF is still harbouring the KNF cadres is false. In case of doubt, the Joint Monitoring Group may conduct a spot verification, he said.

Roland further went on to say that KNF was foun-ded in 1984-85 with Nehlun as founder president. After passing away of Nehlun in an encounter with the security forces at Motbung on October 12, 1993, ST Thang-boi has been appointed as the president of the Front and there is no KNF (P) faction of KNF. In case of fact- ionalism in KNF, the new faction would not have the post of president but it would be headed by a commander in-chief, the PRO explained.

Although KNF does not go along with any other UG outfits operating either in the hill or the valley, yet it loves and respects all the outfits, the PRO said.

Th PRO further informed that the unfortunate incident of firing exchange which broke out between KNF and 36 Assam Rifles at Heingang on Mar-ch 10 this year that led to the death of one personnel from each side was due to wrong information given to the AR.

FCS director in charge of the outfit Solomon observed that the demand of the KNF is for a Kuki State and all the Kuki UG outfits, though different have the same demand. Medical director of the outfit C Cho- chon and commander of the headquarters Lal were also present at the occasion.
