Nine killed as violence rocks NC Hills

Haflong April 20 – At least 11 persons were killed and 22 others injured in four separate incidents that took place in the NC Hills district during the past 24 hours. In two of the incidents, suspected militants of the Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel group) were involved while the other two were related to road mishaps.

Five APBn personnel and one civilian were killed when unidentified gunmen suspected to be the DHD (J) militants, opened fire on a convoy of trucks near Panimoor falls on the Umrangso-Lanka road about 35 KM from Umrangso, at about 12.30 pm. The incident took place when about 16 trucks of the Vinay Cement Ltd with security personnel were proceeding towards Umrangso from Lanka. Those killed in the incident have been identified as Havildar Sahid Ali, constables-Akas Ali, Ramen Saikia, Gulam Hassan, Golap Saikia, and driver of a truck Bir Mangal Singh.

Militants also snatched away four AK-47 rifles and one INSAS rifle from the killed personnel. The convoy of the Vinay Cement trucks was returning from Lanka to load cement from the Vinay Cement factory at Umrangso. The convoy was escorted by a team of five APBn jawans, traveling in a truck. All of the APBn jawans and the driver of the truck were killed in the incident.

They were sent to Silchar Medical College Hospital where Atul Kumar succumbed to his injury this morning.

DHD(J) had recently warned through a section of the local media here that it would unleash a reign of terror in the district, if the government failed to consider its demand for a ceasefire and change in the nomenclature of the district, and creation of an Autonomous State for the Dimasas under Article 244(A).

In a tragic road mishap that took place between Hatikhali and Manderdisa about 7.30 this morning, two persons died on the spot when a truck turned on its side. In another road mishap involving a 607 bus bound for Umrangso, its driver lost control over the vehicle around 12 this afternoon, near Haflong Tinilali under Diyungmukh Police Station.
