Suangdai villagers in Manipur allege torture

Lamka, Apr 20: Residents of Sungdai, an interior village in Singngat sub-division alleged that about a hundred well-armed men had tortured them on April 15, supposedly on the pretext of harboring another armed group. Some of the victims who narrated their tales to the media said, the armed men suspected to be valley based UGs entered the jhum field of Sungdai village in broad daylight and took a ten-year-old-boy Lamminlal, who was on the field with his aunt, with them.

As Lamminlal did not return home in the evening, the villagers gathered to search for his whereabouts but before they embarked on hunting him the heavily armed men had surrounded the gathering and took two villagers with them.

One of the two villagers in captive, Soson told the media that he was severely thrashed by the armed men who demanded to know whether there are any ZRA cadres in the village, until he was knocked out of conscious. When I wake up, there was no one beside me so I ran for my my life under the dark and reached Sungdoh village, he said. The other victims who alleged torture and proceeded here for treatment was Chinsuanmung, who said at least three other were treated at their village and identified them as Chinlam (30) Gousiam (30) and Chinsuan (50). The kidnapped boy according to the duo was handed over to the villagers during the melee, when the villagers were surrounded by the armed men and before two of them including, Soson, were whisked away.

The armed men who took shelter inside the premises of the village Church, atop an adjoining hill were also accused of torturing the Church chowkidar after he ran towards the villagers, out of fear .
