Ops Summer Storm called off in Manipur

IMPHAL, Apr 20: Along with calling off the Operation Summer Storm being launched at Keibul Lamjao National Park area of Loktak lake under the joint co-ordination of the Army and the State police forces in the interest of ensuring smooth conduct of the election to the Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency whi- ch would go to poll on April 22, troops have started withdrawing from the Park.

However, the apprehensive displaced villagers are yet to return to their respective homesteads.

Talking to The Sangai Express, PRO Defence Wing Col Rajesh Mishra while confirming the report of calling off Operation Summer Storm launched jointly by troops of 57 Mountain Division and Police since the intervening night of April 11 and 12, said that the Army’s dominant has been established and Loktak area is now free of PREPAK cadres.

The PRO further said that Operation Summer Storm has broken the backbone of PREPAK and people will be able to live peacefully without any fear and extortion from the proscribed cadres.

Meanwhile, according to information received by the press, the decision to call off the operation has come about in the backdrop of the threat of the displac-ed villagers to boycott the Lok Sabha election. Consequent to calling of the operation, based on the report furnished by the SP of Bishnupur, the Deputy Commissioner of the district has submitted a report to the Chief Electoral Officer stating that troops being deployed in Khordak and Nongmaikhong area have vacated, sources said.

Local sources also confirmed withdrawal of the troops deployed in connection with the operation from Khordak and Nongmai-khong starting from 9.30 am today. However, as there is no official announcement in this regard, the displaced villagers are still apprehensive of returning to the res- pective homesteads. When contacted a top police officer informed that to dispel fear from their minds and allow them to take part in the election, the SP of Bishnupur would go along with the displaced villagers to Khordak and Nongmaikhong area in the morning tomorrow. The police officer also reiterated that the troops deployed for the operation have been withdrawn. Amy has claimed that in all 12 PREPAK cadres have been killed during the 9-day long operation conducted along with use of helicopter, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and other sophisticated equipments in locating the UG hideouts.
