IMPHAL, Nov 19: APJ Abdul Kalam is no more the President of India but his efforts to install a computer centre at Bunglun High School in Henglep sub-division of Churachandpur district, which he visited a year back as President, has finally been realized as the installation of the computers has been completed after a delay of eight months.

As per assurance given by the President, the actual target for the completion of the installation of the centre with 10 computers was March this year but it was delayed for eight months.

“I don’t blame anyone” for the delay, said Gin Gangte. But he was not satisfied with the loss of one academic year of the students in imparting computer training.

APJ Abdul Kalam as President of India on his one day visit to the state on October 16, 2006 landed at the Bunglun village, a native place of Gin Gangte, a social activist and recipient of the “Jewel of India” award and also serving as headmaster of Bunglon High School.

The President paid the visit to the village to keep his promise to Gin Gangte and to inspect whether the state government had converted into action his direction to the Manipur government to install computer as per the wishes of the headmaster.

It was on the day Gangte received the “Jewel of India” award, the President, asked Gangte what he wanted from him (Kalam) within his capacity as a President of the country. With surprise Gin Gangte requested the President to set up a computer centre in his school so that the students of his school could avail the knowledge of computers.

Pleased with the request of the teacher, the President directed the Manipur government to provide funds to the school with immediate provision of Rs. 50,000 for start of the installation of the computer centre.

The work of installation of one computer by the Manipur government was also delayed. The single computer was also installed at the last minute before the President’s visit.

Though it was not openly expressed, in apparent dissatisfaction with the government response, the President promised to provide 10 more computer sets and equipments for science laboratory in the school by March 2007.

The promise of the President to install computers and science laboratory in the high school in the remote area of Churachandpur district of Manipur was finally converted into work as 10 computers were installed in the school though it was delayed for eight months.

The installation of the computer centre in the school was finally completed on Saturday last, according to Gin Gangte in an exclusive talk with this correspondent. The computers were installed by the ACER India Private limited, Pondichery while the computer networking was by TACKER Technologies Private Limited, New Delhi.

On fulfillment of his long cherished dream, an excited Gin said the installation of computer centre is a great milestone for the rural people. This is the beginning of the India’s Vision 2020.
“Now my children will get a chance to explore the world. You know, education without computer knowledge is not a perfect education,” Gangte said.

Though he was not blaming the delay in the completion of the work of installation, Gangte said that if the works had been completed within the targeted time in March this year, at least the students could have got computer knowledge from this current academic calendar.

But he said with great hope, “The computer centre will target to give practical knowledge to around 15 thousand people within the next five years.”

The total expenditure incurred in the installation of the computer centre was estimated at around Rs. 10 lakhs. The formal inauguration function of the computer centre is scheduled sometime in December this year, Gangte added.
