Ready for the Giant Leap..?
India just celebrated with joyous its Golden Jubilee (60th) of independence. Many promises fulfilled while more commitments were taken with bold determination and great confidence. The 10th Fifth Year Plan (2001-02-2006-07) has achieved the highest ever growth rate since its inception in 1951-52, with 7.2%. The industrial sector is growing rapidly; the services sector which accounts for 54% of GDP is the fastest growing sector. Professional services like IT-enabled (BPO, etc), engineering has earned India a name in the knowledge of economy. There is no doubt of India making it to the exclusive trillionaire club, especially when rupee is soaring at such speed. If the trend continues to be like this, in no time India will be within the top 5 performers.(now at 11th ) However it will never be that easy as the population at the same time touches the breathtaking 1 billion mark in 1999. Many economists feels India’s future promising.
Vision 2020 inspired by Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam’s India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium foresees India a developed nation by the year 2020. Once we achieved this vision, India will have the following ambitious features:
i) Self sufficient: At present, there are 23.3 million hungry stomachs
ii) Poverty and illiteracy should be very low: Now they constitute a healthy 26% and 34% respectively.
iii) Majority population must be engaged in non-agro-based activities: Now a high 64% depend on agriculture.
With all these results and innovations, one can say India is no more a sleeping giant. Surely a great future awaits us.
But a close look at some places/regions shows that there is very little or no difference. To be a part of these ambitious visions, every UTS/states must give their best toward it. State must prepare well for this giant leap. Prevailing condition of State like our own Manipur , one doubt whether they are ever aware of these happenings. The ministers in this part of the country are happier with their allotted constituency funds than go for a bigger role which would have benefited them more as well as their people at large. The biggest hurdle state like Manipur might be facing vis-a vis Vision 2020 is nothing else than corruption. Here not only those in powers are corrupted but the entire people seem to have a common understanding. Party system seems to acquire a new definition in this helpless region. The politician neither cares the people nor their party. They choose to work for their friends (Guess who..?) which often leads to reshuffling, re-reshuffling and re-re-reshuffling where the real sufferers is the mass. At this stage I think we at least need a “corruptician”, one like Laloo Prasad who corrupts openly but also works more openly.
It will be too big a sin/mistake to let go this opportunity. We don’t just have time to speculate things or experiment. The present economic scenario demands patience and commitments. One fears if we don’t take necessary measures, we will be left far behind one day with irreparable damages.
I just can’t but hope our politicians (Manipur) will someday wake up from their worst daydreams. But please, when it is not too late.
In the regional levels, we have a big role to play too. We must educate the mass about the latest Government plans and projects. We must ensure that our farmer gets the best and latest seeds. We must insist the state government that our farmers get alternative aid to the Kishan Credit Concept which is big hit in states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, etc.
Instead of hunting one another on minor issues, we should for a greater cause unite and look beyond the horizon. We must believe in unity which is the only way of our upliftment. Since we have a common goal and objectives, we must have a common voice and body. As mentioned there is no time for speculation and experimentation. We have had so many in the past. The need of the hour is to be practical, practical in thoughts and practical in deeds. We are to live only once, why not choose the best possible life. The Vision 2020 should be our driving force. It teaches us the value of unity. We must draw inspiration from it and try to avail all the benefits when the time comes. Our slogan will be - Everything will wait but time will not wait.
I hope Vision 2020 serves as an eye-opener to the Manipur Government, unite the scattered and liberate us from our worst nightmares
