IMPHAL, Jun 9: Suspected Kuki underground activists in combat dress and armed with sophisticated weapons reportedly bashed up four persons who had gone for fishing in Manipur River along the boundary of Chandel and Churachandpur districts at around 4.30 am yesterday.
Out of the four victims, three of them identified as identified as Th Kunjo (58) s/o late Subom, Angom Ngongo (31) s/o Kali , Hijam Juge (52) s/o late Heiyaijao, all residents of Sugnu Makha Leikai, have been brought and admitted to RIMS Hospital here. While the fourth victim identified as Chingjaroi Zou (41) of Kha-Keithelmanbi stayed back at home.
According to the injured persons, they set out to fish in Manipur river one week back and had gone inside the Indo-Myanmar border.
However, yesterday morning, while returning, they came across a group of armed persons suspected to be KNA activists at Beihang port. After stopping them, the armed persons took away their boat, fishing nets, utensils and all the fishes caught by them besides beating them up. The armed persons reportedly asked them whether they had come as informers of some other rival UG groups and that the goods taken from them can be retrieved only when the owner of the boat himself comes to collect them.
Expressing serious concern over such incidents of harassment by Kuki militants in Sugnu area, a resident of Sugnu, on condition of anonymity, lamented that although an agreement had been signed in the past with the main efforts of an organisation called Ching-Tam Peace Committee, there has been no let up in cases of beating up civilians by the Kuki militants.
The resident also demanded to know from the Government how the SoO is being implemented and whether harassment of civilians is allowed.
