Assam Women urged to make dowry a thing of the past

DHUBRI, March 16 – Dhubri district unit of the Asom Mahila Samata Society must be given credit for taking its women empowerment drive to rural areas. As a part of this endeavour, different women organisations under it celebrates International Women’s Day at rural places such as Nayahat (Mahamaya Block), Birsing (Birsing Jarua Block), Bhasani Gaon (Bilasipara Block), Sonaluguri Gaon (Bilasipara Block), Kalahat Gaon (Gauripur Block) and Chapgarh Gaon (Rupshi Block) simultaneously with a day-long programme at each place.

The celebration of the International Women’s Day at Nayahat was organised by Mahamaya Matribhumi Block Federation and participated by 114 Sanghas (women organisation) of 91 villages under the federation.

The celebration started with hoisting of the Mahila Samata flag by Sharifun Nessa, secy, Matribhumi Block Federation, followed by a procession of more than 150 women shouting slogans against atrocities on women, elemination of dorwy and child marriage including to boosting girl education and protection of women’s rights. After the procession, different competitive sports events were held among the women.

Open meeting under the presidentship of Charu Bala Barman, president, Matribhumi Block Federation was held and the purpose of the meeting and significance of the day was explained by Anowara Rashul, DRP, Mahila Samata Society, Dhubri. The meeting was addressed by Golam Rabbani, president, ‘Sachetan Yuva Manch’, a local youth organisation and several women representing different Panchayat Federations.

In her presidential address Barman asked all women to take the oath to neither accept nor offer any dowry in the marriages of their sons and daughters and accordingly the oath was taken by all. They pledged to implement the same immediately after.
