Manipur youth designs car for elderly people

SOBHAPATI SAMOM | IMPHAL, March 17 – A young IITian, who hails from a hill village in Manipur’s most backward Tamenglong district, has an answer to Ratan Tata by designing an ‘Oldsmobile’, a small car for elderly people. For this he was awarded by the Japanese automobile giant Nissan after a strenuous all India car design competition. The designer Ringlarei Pamei took the less-trodden path by attempting to improve the quality of life of the elderly people while others designed for the opinion of others by taking chances with aesthetics.

The news of acceptance of a car design for elderly people by Japanese automobile giant Nissan was hailed by many relatives and well-wishers of this 27-year-old Zeliangrong designer Ringlarei, who is the only son of Dichamang Pamei, former deputy commissioner and a resident of Tamenglong. He completed his Class X from Tamenglong Don Bosco High School and graduated from the Laxman Public School in New Delhi.

Ringlarei, a graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering and pursuing Master of Design (Industrial Design) in IIT, Delhi, had designed the ‘Oldsmobile’, a small car for elderly people. It was so good that the car’s blue print was picked up by the international car manufacturer Nissan and got him recognition.

He was awarded and invited to visit the international car manufacturer Nissan at Japan, the source said. Ringlarei couldn’t be contacted as he is presently visiting Japanese motor giant, Nissan on the company’s invitation and he is expected to be back in New Delhi this month end, family sources added.

Speaking to The Assam Tribune, his father Dichamang Pamei said that they are happy on hearing the news and wished his son the best in his future career.

Zeliangrong Students Union, Tamenglong district expressing happiness over the designer’s success said that it really appreciated the budding scientist for his hard work and for setting an example for the younger generations.

Manipur Govt inaction on employee killings flayed

IMPHAL, March 17 – The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the murder of Dr Kishan and his two staff has alleged that the much-hyped CBI enquiry is a non-starter. The JAC also asserted that the lip-service, token visits to the families of the victims and statements in front of the media were all gimmicks.

S Subhangker, convener of the JAC, further stated in a press statement that the enquiry commission and the CBI enquiry was just an eyewash. Asserting the commission instituted by an “executive order” cannot override the statutory provisions of the CRPC, the JAC held that under the pretext of the “enquiry commission”, the FIRs which were lodged as a suo moto case by Ukhrul and Senapati police stations were lying unattended.

The JAC also alleged that the Government of Manipur by announcing the handing over of the case to the CBI, was only trying to run away from its responsibilities. The committee further asserted that it was well aware that there has been record of the CBI being used by political parties in power for its political gains.
