Mizoram Cong declares fire victims as martyrs | Daduhi clarify

Aizawl: The Congress Legislature Party in Mizoram, led by Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, on Tuesday declared two youths of Serkhan village, who died battling forest fires on Saturday, as ''martyrs''. The CLP meeting announced an ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 each for Zonunzira (27) and Laltlanmawia (28), who were charred to death by a raging fire that engulfed the village's reserved forest. Earlier, the Kolasib DC gave Rs 5,000 each and the Kolasib DFO announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10,000 each for the fire victims.

Forest fires, trigerred by jhum burning, have claimed four lives in Mizoram this year. On March 10, a 45-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter in Sesawng village were killed as a raging fire engulfed the forest they were collecting woods from.

The state environment and forest department has been put on alert following the frequent forest fires that injured 11 people, besides claiming four lives.

''We have mobilised volunteers from among the villagers to stand guard against forest fires in their respective villages,'' principal chief conservator of forests R C Thanga said.

Airlines officials said flights had been cancelled since March 11 as thick pall of smoke shrouded the sky. They warned that the situation might not improve till March 19 as massive smoke still engulfed the air.

Most of the Mizo farmers are still engaged in the traditional jhum or shifting cultivation in which farmers clear forests and burn them to sow seeds of paddy. (UNI)

  1. Mizoram CM ready to accept judgement on corruption cases

Aizawl, Mar 18 : Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla today told the state assembly that he would accept the judgement on the corruption cases pending against him.

While reacting to Opposition member's allegations, Lal Thanhawla said, "I accept that the law should take its own course." However, he said the graft charges initiated by a church leader and senior politician, who submitted Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against him in the Supreme Court, has never been a matter of concern.

"I am ready to accept any kind of orders the presiding judge on the case may pass," Thanhawla said.

In his supplementary question, former minister and Opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) member B Lalthlengliana asked whether the public prosecutor and five assistant public prosecutors were sacked to ensure that the graft case against chief minister was tried in the absence of government advocates appointed by previous MNF government.

"Is it legal to dismiss the case even before hearing in the court of law?" Lalthlengliana asked.

State Law Minister Lalsawta, however, replied that the public prosecutors and government advocates were not government servants and it is mandatory that they should resign if there is a change of government.
