IMPHAL, Mar 18: Chief minister O Ibobi Singh has assured two fire fighting vehicles and a water reservoir each at every district headquarter. He was answering to a questio by Dr. Khashim Ruivah (MCA) who brought up the matter of the fire incident on March 9 at Wino Bazar, Ukhrul. This was the second such tragedy he said. In connection with the incident, the MLA asked the government to provide enough fire brigades immediately especially in the hill districts, and there being only one fire brigade service in Ukhrul district and that too 6-7 km away from town. He also asked if neglect was proven what the government would do further in regard to the incident.
Morung Makunga, independent MLA, also told the House that the fire at Wino Bazar, Ukhrul burnt down nearly 55 shops, 53 houses. He said he heard from the localities the fire was started from a Rice Hotel and how far was the government investigating into the incident.
The chief minister replied that it would reinforce fire service from Imphal. According to a preliminary report till now the fire was started from 5/6 LPG cylinders which affected mainly about seventy families in the incident. The government had distributed nearly 225 blankets, 100 quintals of rice etc. to the affected families. The election code of conduct being in force now any proper inquiry could be done only after the elections, he said.
Civil engineers of PWD to go on indefinite cease work strike
IMPHAL, Mar 18: The civil engineers of PWD have said they would go on indefinite ceasework strike from 24th March if the demands made by them are not fulfilled.
79 civil engineers in different grades in the works department have signed a resolution that they would cease their work on the demand that no other engineer of other streams should be made chief engineer or additional chief engineer other than civil post.
They said that the PWD was only meant for the civil engineering department and it would be irrelevant that other engineering departments become its chief as they have different work procedure.
They therefore said the head of the PWD should be from a civil engineering department and they should not be mixed up with other engineering departments. They also unanimously nominated M Lokendro Singh who is the seniormost civil engineer to be the chief engineer.
Body found in Churachandpur
Lamka, Mar 18: A dead body which was detected by a dog in a ditch on the ridge of Pangzawl village early morning of the 9th March and was dug out by the police today at about 11.40 am.
The person was apparently killed and buried at the spot some time back as there were ropes believed to have been used to tie his limbs at the site, according to a source from the police.
The dead body was highly decomposed and only the skeletal remains like three ribs, four backbones, long pant blue colour, a grey colour jacket with red linings were found.
The police had been keeping it since 9 March thinking somebody would come to claim it, but no one turned up.
The police source added that they had dug out as per directives from the district magistrate issued on the 16 of this month and will be sending it to RIMS for forensic examination and other neccesary investigations.
Supplementary grants passed by House
IMPHAL, Mar 18: The supplementary demands for grants 2008-09 put up by the chief minister of the state O Ibobi Singh was passed by the House after thorough discussions.
Before the supplementary demands for grants 2008-09 was passed by the House many questions were raised.
MLA O.Joy said the power supply in the state was decreasing and as power was a daily essential item for every household it was very unfortunate.
Talking about the law and order situation in the state, he put up the matter regarding the attack on some political workers by some unidentified gunmen. He also said some officers of government departments were withdrawing the bills from their accounts by self cheques and asked what the government was doing regarding such wrongdoings.
In reply the chief minister said the total power required by the state was 164.5 Megawatts and the state was getting below 60 Megawatts and the fuel power plant at Leimakhong would consume more amount as it is run by diesel and will operate when energy comes.
In reply to the matter of government officers entering the amounts on their personal accounts for their own benefits, he said they would be given punishment if found.
On the incident of Manipur Aids Control Society losing Rs. 10 crores, he said the concerned persons were booked and suspended and Rs. 4 crores were recovered from them.
On the attack on political workers by unidentified armed persons, he said it was very unfortunate and also said that the workers had the right to vote for anyone whom they liked, as we are a democratic state. One day the people would turn against them in anger, he added.
