ADC polls in the pipeline

IMPHAL, Apr 10: After a joint meeting attended by Chairman of Hill Area Committee of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, members, MLAs and Ministers held with Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh in the chair this afternoon, it has been decided that the election of the District Council would be held before the onset of rainy season along with granting some more additional power to the Manipur Autonomous District Council Act, 1972.

The joint meeting attended by Chairman of Hill Area Committee Thangmin-lien Kipgen, TD Minister DD Thaisii, MLA V Hang-khanlian, MLA Morung Makunga, MLA Thoirii, MLA Khang-thuanang Panmei, Works Minister K Ranjit, IFC Minister N Biren, Health Minister Ph Parijat, Forest Minister Th Debendra, Power Minister Phung-zathang Tonsing and RD & PR Minister Allauddin Khan among others have also decided to promulgate an ordinance in this regard.

Furthermore, today’s meeting decided that a team of Ministers led by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh would called on the Governor in connection with promulgation of the proposed ordinance and after the Governor looks into the matter, a special session of the Assembly would be convened to endorse the ordinance.

The District Council Bill had been withdrawn by Tribal Development Minister during a special session of the Assembly on April 3.

Gun fire rocks Moreh

MOREH, Apr 10: Following open firing by armed persons in front of civilians at Moreh today, the people of Moreh fled to safer areas. Following the incident, people are unable to venture outside their homes for fear of any untoward incident.

The firing incident took place in front of the Tamil Sangam, Moreh office at Moreh Ward number 4 at about 5.10 pm today.

On hearing the gun shots and explosion of local petrol bomb, people residing in the surrounding fled to safer areas.

Soon after, shops at Moreh Bazar and surrounding areas closed down.
According to some people who witnessed the firing, some 5/6 persons clad in vests came there and started firing 5/6 live rounds besides setting off a bomb.

Some personnel of 24 AR were also present near the site where the firing took place. Moreover, 7 MR personnel were able to see the whole scene.

According to information received from Moreh police station, the firing was done three masked men.

On the other hand, a press release issued by the Meitei Council Moreh observed that security personnel posted in the border town are unable to control such unprovoked firing incidents. It also appealed to all concerned to restrain from such firing activities in the border town inhabited by different communities.
