Microchips to identify pet dogs in Arunachal

Itanagar: Dog owners can now identify their pets through microchips with a specific number, as the Arunachal Pradesh Veterinary Association (APVA) has initiated an innovative programme to transplant microchips in dogs for their correct identity.

The APVA had conducted its maiden microchips transplant on 12 dogs at Pasighat in East Siang district recently as a part of the two-day World Veterinary Day celebration, official sources here on Monday said.

Itanagar-based state zoo veterinary officer Dr J Panor demonstrated the transplantation procedure, which he had successfully done on mithuns (state animal) during the day celebration in the state capital last year.

Mithuns, the prized possession of the tribal people, are let off in the jungle to graze and sustain. But owners at times fought over the semi-domesticated animal for mistaken identity.

The microchips with a specific number would give the correct identity removing any scope for dispute, Dr Panor explained.

Around 601 pet dogs of the 700 registered were also vaccinated during the celebration, sources informed, adding an interactive discussion on 'veterinarian and livestock partnership', involving the farmers, was also organised during the two-day celebration. (UNI)

Sikkim BJP rues lack of star campaigners

Gangtok: With no star campaigner for the BJP in Sikkim which goes to the assembly and Lok Sabha elections on April 30, the state party is feeling let down.

A number of high-profile BJP leaders like Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Shatrughan Singha and Bollywood star Hema Malini visited Darjeeling to solicit support for former Defence and Finance minister Jaswant Singh, but none could spare time to visit Sikkim situated across the Teesta river in the East, state BJP sources rued.

A sizeable crowd waited on Sunday in the sweltering heat at the Paljor Stadium for hours for a glimpse of Hema Malini before it was announced that her visit had been cancelled at the last minute.

The sources pointed out that the Congress was able to showcase AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, while there were none from the BJP.

"We have been done in by our own leadership for their disinclination to campaign for our candidates in Sikkim," a visibly disappointed saffron party candidate told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

Explaining the non-availability of the senior BJP leaders for campaigning in the state, party state unit President H R Pradhan said that a request had been made to the headquarters for scheduling some top leaders for electioneering in the Himalayan State, but unfortunately it did not materialize.

"It will definitely affect us in the polls," an exasperated Pradhan said in reply to a question.

The BJP is contesting 11 assembly and the lone Lok Sabha seats in Sikkim to find a footing in the state.

The saffron party had performed abysmally in the two assembly polls it had participated in 1994 and 2004.

The BJP had contested three assembly seats in 1994 and polled 0.16 per cent votes, while in 2004 it had put up four candidates and polled a minuscule 0.34 per cent votes. (PTI)
