Mizoram Govt submits financial proposals to FC

Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla on Friday proposed a fund requirement of Rs 2,335.02 crore to the 13th Finance Commission to heal the state’s economy. The Chief Minister and his council of ministers were meeting the visiting Finance Commission headed by its Chairman Dr Vijay Kelkar at the civil secretariat conference hall at the New Capital Complex.

He also stressed that the future progress and prosperity of the state largely depended on the decision of the Finance Commission.

Mr Thanhawla proposed a special development package for reconstruction of rural economy of the state at the tune of Rs 1200 crore. He alleged that the rural economy of Mizoram was ravaged by the 20-year-long insurgency, from 1966 to 1986, and it had never been reconstructed.

He also proposed two more airports in addition to the state's lone Lengpui Airport at Saitluk in southern Mizoram and at Ngur in the eastern parts of state at the cost of Rs 250 crore and Rs 10.69 crore to ease transport constraint.

Mr Thanhawla also requested the Commission to consider grant-in- aid of Rs 107.78 crore for completion of the Rajiv Gandhi sports stadium at Aizawl.

To address the problem of fiscal management, his government also proposed to set up fiscal affairs centre for which the Finance Commission was asked to provide a specific grant of Rs 18.71 crore, he added.

The Chief Minister also presented to the Finance Commission a fund requirement of Rs 387.445 crore for construction of buildings for offices and residential quarters for officers and staff of various departments of the state government. (UNI)
