Imphal, April 26: The CPI and the Manipur Peoples Party today intensified their agitation against alleged rigging by Congress workers during polling in the Inner Manipur seat on Wednesday. The MPP today staged a sit-in at the party headoffice in Imphal city, demanding repoll in 11 booths in the Andro Assembly segment of Imphal East.
The MPP workers also burnt the effigy of chief electoral officer Shambhu Singh near the party office.
“The Congress workers captured the 11 booths in Andro and rigged the polls. We will not remain silent until repoll is ordered,” MPP MLA N. Bijoy Singh said.
The CPI workers today held a demonstration at Yairpok in Andro, a day after more than a hundred party comrades staged a sit-in at the Rising Athletics Union ground at Khurai in Imphal East demanding repoll.
The MPP and the CPI have despatched separate teams to Delhi to petition the Election Commission for repoll.
CPI candidate Moirangthem Nara Singh and CPM state secretary and co-convenor of the Left and Democratic Co-ordination Committee Ksh. Santa today left Imphal for New Delhi.
The committee, comprising the CPI, CPM, RSP, Forward Bloc and the Janata Dal (Secular), had fielded Nara Singh.A four-member MPP team led by L. Chandramani Singh left Imphal yesterday afternoon to take up alleged rigging by Congress workers in 11 booths in Imphal East with the Election Commission.
The MPP team also includes Thounaojam Chaoba Singh, the party candidate in the Inner seat, besides its MLAs Okram Joy Singh and L. Ibohalbi Singh.
The CPI is a partner in the Okram Ibobi Singh’s Congress-led Secular Progressive Front ministry while the MPP is the main Opposition with four members in the Assembly. The CPI and the Congress had a friendly fight in Manipur Inner where sitting Congress MP Thokchom Meinya Singh is seeking a re-election.
The Andro Assembly constituency is represented by Th. Shyam Kumar Singh who resigned from the post of Deputy Speaker and surrendered before an Imphal court on April 18. He got an MPP ticket and won the Assembly polls from Tihar Jail.
