Female voters outnumber males in Manipur

IMPHAL, April 26 – A total of 5,83,072 voters out of 8,25,019 in Manipur exercised their franchise. Interestingly, with 3,07,293 turnout record of female voters, more women exercised their franchise than their male counterparts. A total of 2,75,779 male voters turned out to cast their vote.

Thangmeiband Assembly constituency, the home of Kasom Khullen SDO Dr Th Kishan who was murdered along with two subordinates in February, has recorded the lowest turnout of voters among 32 Assembly seats in Manipur’s four valley districts – Imphal West, East, Bishnupur and Thoubal during the Lok Sabha polling for Inner Manipur parliamentary seat on April 22.

The reason is poll boycott in the constituency by Thangmeiband United Club and Thangmeiband Meira Paibee Apunba in protest against the government’s inaction into the killings by NSCN-IM.

The polling percentage in the Assembly seat was 46.9 per cent as per Election deptartment’s report. Only 12,550 voters including 6,263 females out of total 26,719 voters in Thangmeiband, the Assembly seat of former Chief Minister Radhabinod Koijam, cast their votes.

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh’s native constituency Thoubal has the highest polling record of 89.6 per cent.

However percentage of voters turnout in Inner Manipur parliamentary seat having 32 Assembly segments was 70.67 per cent.

At Konthoujam Assembly seat, where Congress candidate and sitting MP, Dr T Meinya is contesting, polling recorded was only 71.61 per cent.

Wangoi Assembly seat, the home Assembly seat of the BJP candidate, former Chief Minister, W Nipamacha polled 83 per cent. Manipur People’s Party candidate Th Chaoba’s home constituency Nambol polled 84.30 per cent of the total 27,884 votes.

Among the 13 Assembly segments of the district, Thangmeiband recorded the lowest turnout of 46.97 per cent.
